Christmas present worth the wait

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Christmas present worth the wait

In August I went from a Trek 7500 Hybrid to a Specialized Tarmac Double Comp and haven't looked back. It's been a fantastic transition and I have gotten pretty passionate about riding, but I have lost my riding pal who's still on his Trek 7500. It's gotten to the point where I give him a 20-minute head start on our weekend rides to make it to the halfway point and then I cruise at his speed on the way back. All the time he's telling me he can hear my bike purring and to let it loose and he'll see me back on the block. But I always hang with him, afterall we're buds not to mention he's my son's God Father. So my wife and I decided to up his ride. I just got back from my LBS with an 07 Allez double, aluminum, CF fork and post and pretty decent components. Very nice ride for the deal I got and what I hope to be a well received Christmas present. I hope he gets excited like I did in terms of the drastically different ride and pace etc. It's so cool to let go and ride. Man, the sh@#!f I think about along the way.

Awesome present, but are you sure it fits?

That'd be a sick gift if it did.

It should fit every bit as good as mine, we're both sized to the same Trek 7500. My LBS will size him into it in December also.

I know man. When I bought the Tarmac in August, I told my wife it was a Christmas present and I'd wait until then. That lasted about 2-weeks and I caved. But it will be worth the look on his face to wait.

Thats awesome of you and your wife to do that. What a great friend. But I agree the miles you guys will get in together now, during the great autumn weather, would be worth advancing the gift now.

Have fun, and you guys tear it up!

No kidding.

I'm guessing your wife is expecting something pretty good herself now.

You must be married too. Yes, when I got my Tarmac, I got the old, "Go ahead Mike you deserve it, you work hard....." Then her birthday came in September. You can't ride a pearl necklace but she likes it. And, yes, I'm thinking about the coming pending comments from you comrades....

Way too easy. I'm not taking the shot.

Nice gift though.

Good point. There is a likelihood he may be thinking about a bike for Christmas since you have upgraded and there is a mismatch for you two riding together.

If you give it to him now he and his wife can redirect their thoughts to something else if they are, while there is still some time for them to put some thoughts to Christmas purchases. Or you could just tell his wife and ask her to be hush about it.
