anyone else find it weird that nashbar and performance crashed on the same day and are both giving 10% off coupons

poor cyclist 10-24-07 08:10 PM

marketing technique

Dishonest marketing.

They had 10%off all order over $75 yesterday.

Vista prints does this a lot also.

Psimet2001 10-24-07 08:19 PM

Performance = Nashbar. Same company. Next.

I did smile a bit at Nashbar's "we crashed" picture, though.

DocMan 10-24-07 08:59 PM

Yes, Performance purchased Nashbar as well as SuperGo and several other companies over the last few years. They are in Engulf + Devour mode.

on another note.. i get email updates from both... like every other day and its basically the same thing..
20% of orders of $100, 10% off orders of 50%, shoe sale only today, trainer sale only today, etc.. Makes me almost want to think that we are all paying an over excess of 20% markup. Its almsot like going to your local grocery store and at the check out they ask you if you have a Albertsons, Shaws, Safeway, etc card so that they could give you the discount.

It's part marketing, and part skirting distribution pricing agreements. Mostly marketing. Something to consider though is that they always have a sale, and are always offering a deal, but the stated "normal" or "Regular" price on an item adheres to any minimum nationally advertized price agreement they have with the manufacturer.

Instead of getting in a anti-trust battle over being offered lower prices for the same items in the same competing markets as mom and pops (hello A&P/ Robinson Act) they offer the items at the same pricing, but constantly offer a sale on the specific item, or offer a % off, allowing them to give generalized back end margin instead of getting into an arguement with the manufacturer or local mom and pop (where they have retail locations) over "unfair" competition.

I just wish Nashbar would go with continually providing their best price and spend the effort they spend on continual drumming up these artificial special deals to work on reasonable shipping times.

Monday I ordered, via Ebay, a Nashbar front rack (Nashbar is sold out) and then immediately ordered the bag specifically to go with it from Nashbar with 2 day shipping.

Today the rack arrived from Oklahoma. The bag did not. Nashbar is about an 8 hour drive from here, Oklahoma is about 20 hours... I paid about the same shipping charges in both cases.

I actually paid for 2 day service before 4:00 hoping to get both items at the same time... what a sap I am.

I should have searched to see if a third party was selling the Nashabar bag so I could get it sooner.

I think I have finally given up on Nashbar.

I just want free shipping soon as I want to buy a $7.95 roll of bar tape and lowest cost ground shipping currently lists at $5.75.

I shop online mostly myself, and I'm not saying this to pick a fight, or start a commentary about online bike shops vs LBS, but you do realize you could probably go to a local shop and have them order the same tape and only about about $10-$12 - still saving you money.

Don't know if it is possible due to the tape you selected, but it is a thought.

It is because of the type of tape I want. Specifically a natural brown color that matches a Brooks saddle. I've scoured and asked the local shops for such a color with no luck.

I learned about this natural brown cork Nashbar tape from a thread on BF about getting the best match to a Brooks. If anyone knows a source for tape like this that an LBS can order, let me know.

Otherwise, I almost always buy locally unless the cost difference is to great to justify, which it rarely is.

You know...I didn't notice.

But Performance/Nashbar bashing threads are so much fun. :D

I did the natural cork tape and honey shellac thing to match my brooks, complete with hemp twine twice now.
Pics in my sig.

Performance was recently "devoured" itself.

They have a 20% coupon on the site - can you use more than one? If not this OOPS thing would get you less of a deal than the promotion they have going.
