Wilier Thor carbon 2006, DA equipped, only moderately light (not a particular important thing for me). I'm 160 lbs, ride moderately hard, like to corner etc. Like a good road feel.

So. I get the impression these American Classic Victory wheels aren't too hot. My wife's set had a rear hub loosen up, so I took it apart. Was not impressed. With the carbon frame (my first), I'm not really sure how much I'm feeling from the wheels and how much is everything else. But I get the impression the rest of the bike outclasses the wheels.

Am I correct?

If so, I don't have to get some prefab set. I can build wheels up just fine. I'm tempted to get XXXX?? suggestions? hubs and wire them up (suggestions on lacing appropriate?) to (well, I know open pros, what about the other choices?) and have some nice light lively road wheels. I don't know all the new stuff. That's the problem.

Back in the day, I'd be tending to go DA 32 h 3x to Open Pro. But those are sort of heavy duty classics wheels by today's standards. I don't know how light to go for relatively limited $$$. Today's wheels use so few spokes etc. I don't want trouble, but I'm not a hard rider. Firm, but not hard.

I don't need new, either, so something appropriate to look at on eBay would be worth knowing about. There are reviews and this and that available to evaluate, but most aren't from folks with much context. What do old school riders with lots of miles in their legs who like a sensitive ride with lots of feel like riding? Wheels that will let this fine Italian frame work extra nice in the turns, climb well, and soak up our rough road rumble?

Or maybe the Victorys are just fine. Haven't given any trouble yet and stay true. Reasonably light, I suppose.

great frame btw.. i love williers.. i would kill for a LAMPRE replica...

nothings wrong with an open pro... good rim obviously has been popular for so long... some of the latest rims people have been using that i like are.. custom wheelsets made with velocity rims ... aeroheads/aerohead ocr makes a great custom wheelset thats light and will last for a long time... or another set that seems to be popular right now is the SPEEDCIFIC NIOBIUM rim which are very light and seem to get pretty good reviews from people.



toss in some spokes and quality hubs.. and ur good to goo...

For hubs, use DT Swiss 240s (or 190 Ceramic if you really want to drop the cash). 28 hole is fine, and lace them to some Velocity Aerohead/Aerohead O/C or DT Swiss R1.1 rims.

I have a set of DT Swiss RR1450 wheels, which are essentially the 240s hubs laced 28 radial front/28 2x rear to R1.1 rims with Aerolite spokes, handbuilt and sold complete by DT Swiss. They're great wheels, just slightly heavier than their nominal 1450 g weight. Lighter and more inexpensive than most boutique wheelsets, and more easily fixed should something happen later.

Thanks, like the looks of the Niobium 19. Very much. All the clinchers feel odd to me - too many miles on tubulars. But I'm not going to ride tubulars any more. I'm eagerly awaiting the tubeless revolution. That makes sense to me! The Nobium look like they'd give a more classic feel.

I'll start scanning on velocity, too. Looks like they mostly come 32/28. Might make sense. I don't ride too hard.

I notice most of the commercial wheels come with 14g straight. I'd probably go 14/16 - wonder why this isn't standard? Not much weight, I know, but it adds up I suppose.





OK - now I've really looked at the Niobium. Right stuff for the job. Light, box section, traditional look. Seems 28 / 32 is likely the way to go, with the offset rear. Although maybe 28 / 28 . . . I ride some pretty rough roads and corner hard in the mountains. Now, hubs to get. DT seem higher than I can handle. All these new-fangled things.

Then there's 32 / 32 Ultegra on eBay at $15 . . . Will I really notice 4 extra spokes? radial 14/16. Or if they're still made, 15 / 17 would work. Or maybe something more exotic?

Budget is a constraint. The 32 / 32 w/radial front & 2 or 3x w/radial left rear seems appealing, but I don't know enough about wheels to decide on that without help. I've built hundreds of wheels, but back when they were all 3x to box section rims cuz that's all there was!

I just had to tighten up my rear hub on an American Classic after 1 year and 3k miles. The LBS wasn't much help and thought the hub was worn. After contacting the manufacturer they sent me the pdf file that explained the process. It feels as good as new now. If you want the pdf I can send via electrons.

Also did some shopping for other wheels and the price per gram difference makes my head hurt. If you purchase different wheels and want to get these off you hands please feel freel to let me know. Thanks
