A little confused: do you have to be an advertiser to start a group buy?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

No, but you have to be an advertiser or at least a paid member to post specific items for sale.

I think the concern was because he expressed interest in making a profit in the future. The Pedalforce group buys were organized by a forum member who just got a big group of people together but wasn't affiliated with PedalForce or making a profit. If he is going to profit, he should support the forums since they provided the venue for him to find customers.

So what was specifically wrong with the closed thread? Was it the fact that he listed specific items for sale rather than only discussing the group buy?

Yes. It went from "here are the samples" to "I'm selling these samples for $xxx and I'm selling a Scott and Cervelo frames as well".
