Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

tire upgrades to Trek 1000

Hi,

My son (eleven) has a '07 Trek 1000 which he really likes. The only problem is that on the beatup roads around here he feels a little unsteady on the stock 25c tires, and he's also worried about punctures. I'm wonderign whether it is possible to go to a thicker tire for a little more cushion, and perhaps a more puncture-resistent tire at the same time, like maybe Rivendale Roly-Polys. Does anyone have any suggestions?

28c Continental Ultra Gatorskins sound about right. You could also try specialized armadillo type tires.

Well I've ridden about 1800 miles or so on my Trek 1000. I havn't had any probs with them but I could just be lucky. I wouldn't mind better ones, I used to skid when I couldn't balance my breaking out so my back wheel is worn down quite a bit.

I use Bontrager Race Lite's on my 1000, and they've been good to me for the last 2200 miles. Just an incredible string of luck, I'm sure, but no flats yet on this set.

Try using only (well, mostly) your front brake if you haven't already - it works wonders.

Oh yeah, I've since balance out my breaking between the front and back very well and no longer skid.

...but a pointless post on my part I know

Off-topic, but man, I would've completely destroyed a bike like a Trek 1000 when I was 11. Taking it off of jumps, riding it through the woods, etc.

I must've gone through 5-6 bikes from ages 6-15. Of course, we didn't have much in the way of "mountain" bikes back then, so it wasn't so strange to see a kid building a ramp for his 10 speed.

The local bike shop loved me. I was always replacing broken stuff.
