I would guestimate at around $1500 in 8 months of serious cycling. But that still puts me under a buck a mile, as I just passed 2k miles on my bike. Spent $950 for the bike, probably $200 on clothes, $170 on shoes and pedals, $20 for a new chain, $30 for some lights, $30 for a pump, $20 on tubes that I haven't used yet....yeah....$1500 is about right.

My $ to miles ratio is undefined, since I've put just over 1200 dollars building up a bianchi reparto corse frame from the mid-90s with almost full ultegra including seatpost and stem... unless 600 counts. My $ to miles ratio on my Fremont is probably 1.25:1 though. Hopefully my new, old ride will get my ratio down below 1 after a couple thousand miles. Hopefully I won't be an absolute idiot and get in an accident and make my ratio $100/mile. Lol

I actually don't spend that much on cycling, something that I do a lot of. Once you have the bike you love and have it set up just right and have all the other goodies likes shoes, computer, clothes, etc, I find I just end up buying new tires and having the bike serviced now and then at the LBS. I don't trash my bike, shoes or clothes. I find all of these things last for years. Every 5 or so years I may buy a new bike, if it's a really good deal. One bike I have, a Bianchi Colorado, I rode that thing probably for 20 years. The mountain bike, the other bike or one of of the other bikes, I have I bought for $92 at Walmart 8 years ago and have yet to spend anything on it, except oil the chains and I have ridden the hell out of it.

The problem with cycling is getting into it initally: that can be expensive. And then if you are a compulsive must have the latest everything in Bicycling Magazine, well, the sky is the limit in expenses.

I find my cycling is quite cheap actually compared to some other sports. I know runners that go through $200 runners every 2 months.

And now , it takes about 60 bucks to fill a gas tank.. Couple questions. Are all the purchases necessary. ?... Once you've acquired all the stuff you need, the costs settle down. Its called initial start up costs.

I often ask myself what new stuff would I like.. The list , if I were loaded would be near endless. Cyclists too suffer from the same malady credit card consumers suffer. Buying stuff one does not need. . I know my bike drawer is so chocked full, I can't imagine where I'd put the new stuff. I try to tell myself , I don't need a new bike until the old ones are sort of worn out.. Maybe next year.

Before I picked up cycling, most of my money went towards snowboarding. Now I have to conserve my finances to support year-round hobbies instead of just winter time!
