Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

yes, i'm not posting to bash religion just their methods and the add in general. This line is what made me laugh "me and my friends would love to stop by on our bikes and pray for you".

I wonder if I've seen a guy that had something to do with this bunch.

I was at Dupont Circle one Friday night, no bike, standing on a corner watching a street band play (tuba, drums, and about six or seven trombones ), and a fairly attractive girl rode up and parked herself behind me to watch, too. I nodded, gave a quick smile, and moved a bit to the side so she could get a better view, and she smiled in return.

We've been there for a few minutes when some guy comes riding up and strikes up a conversation with her. It sounds like typical small talk to me, and I'm just guessing that he's hitting on her (as guys tend to do during late weekend nights). She's patient enough to go along with it. Then, I start hearing him ask her things like if she realizes that she's in the wrong religion, that "It's okay for you to believe that, but you're probably going to Hell anyway," etc etc.

She finally had enough, got pissed, and left. I said to him, "Dude, I thought you were just hitting on her," to which he grumbled a bit and rode away.

My only regret is that I didn't try to salvage her evening.

I'm pretty sure Jesus could out climb me, but I'd crush him in a sprint.

Riding is my religion. There have been sprints, climbs, etc. where I swear I've spoken to Jesus.

Wrong forum. Should be in Advocacy and Safety. Of course not even prayer could turn around some of those guys.

I usually have a religious experience when I get off the bike; when the blood starts to flow again there is always a reserection.

Great Idea. I setup a bike repair stand outside my church's building one day and met all sorts of people in addition to fixing a bunch of their bicycles (all for free). Some I have prayed with and still visit them (or they come by for stuff). My only concern would be that they might be Latter Day Saints (Mormons). There isn't anything wrong with using your bicycle for things such as what was advertised. I admire the creativity.

As for the guy talking to the girl first--I generally don't do that because it is often interpreted that way by the girl. And who knows, he may have hoped to win her over so he could date her--in my role as a pastor, I've seen many a desperate young man or woman do this (with often disastrous results). I'm not into "missionary dating" and advise against it.

I'm not denying their right--they have as much right as anyone else to freely exercise their religion (or lack of) in this country. I'm only expressing a pastoral concern I would have if my congregation were involved. I would actually encourage them to engage the mormons (and others) in dialogue though.

Ah, so you'd rather start a confrontation. I wouldn't be concerned about your congregation if I were you since they should be pretty loyal followers anyway.

I'll shut up now.
