Zipp 404 vs. 404 Clydesdales?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Zipp 404 vs. 404 Clydesdales?

Hi. I purchased a set of Zip 404's today, but am having second thoughts regarding whether I should have bought the 404 Clydesdales. The LBS said no big deal, they can just order them for me if I change my mind in the next couple days. They're the same price. Anyway, I weigh 195-200 depending on the stage of training I'm in and I'm a shade over 6'2". I don't plan on riding the Zipps except for races. Any thoughts? Appreciate it, as always....

You should be fine but for a measly 40-50 grams extra weight I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Get the clydes... at your weight the extra spokes will help.

get the clydes or the cross wheels! I believe the weight limit is 200 lbs on regular 404s. I have a buddy that is about 160 and he cracked his Zipps on the first ride...

Zipp reccomends a rider weight of 200lbs or less. I push that limit a little (depending on time of year.) and haven't had any problems with regular 404 clinchers.

+1 on the Clydes. The extra durability and lateral stiffness are worth the few extra grams.

I think you should get the regular 404's to see if Zipp (Sram) really means it when they have a 200lbs. warning.

I'm in the process of buying a set of used custom dimpled Zipp 404's; one front and two rear. They're 24f/28r like Clydes but laced to Ultegra hubs. One of the rear wheels has the cassette body replaced with a Sub-11 converter to use on the track. I can use an allen-key skewer for the front hub so I end up with a set that can be used road or track. I might re-lace one of the rears to a real track hub.

I have a 32 spoke rear "Clyde" 404 (I think they actually have a different number, can't remember what it is), laced to a PT Pro. That thing has been bulletproof and I ride it in all sorts of conditions and races. I weigh 180-185, ride quite a lot of rough roads.

Dr. Pete,

Do you still have your Pinarello that I found a picture of on the forums somewhere? Thanks to you, I now have one that I've modeled after yours Don't have the Lightweights yet though! That is a sweet looking bike!
