Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road cycling = vacuuming

At least according to my health insurance provider.

I just took my health assessment (you get a discount for doing it; 305/345 for those keeping score at home) and among the questions they ask about quantity of vigorous exercise (running, etc) and moderate exercise like gardening, vacuuming, bicycling. So I've decided that my next trainer will be a Hoover. Should get me more watts anyway.

All that education and 12 digit annual profits...

Perhaps it's listed as moderate exercise in order to offset the potential hazards of cycling on the road?

Maybe we've all been vacuuming wrong.

It's because the assumption is that this what we do when we go for a (5 mile) ride:

Not that I think there's anything wrong with that, but it's certainly not taking into account that many people put in over 10 hours of saddle time during the average weekend.

It is probably listed as moderate because they are using the lowest reasonable ond of the activity. At the low end cycling is less than walking.

Bet they do hte same for swimming, though perhaps with an upgrade if one is in a competitive program.

Gardening can be pretty intense. Back in my early 20s I gardened a fair amount. A good Saturday meant 3 loads, read 3 tons of Manure loaded into the truck by hand and unloaded the same way. Tilled in with a rototiller. Hard work. But I doubt many Garden that way. My mom still has the house and the soil treated that way for a few years is still pretty nice.

When I hurt my neck, my doctor told me I couldn't ride my bike. He also told me I wasn't permitted to use the vacuum cleaner.

I rode my bike, anyway.

I'd consider the type of bicycling we do to be more akin to "running" than "bicycling" in that survey. They're thinking you're going for a liesurely 1 mile pedal around the sub division with flowers in your basket. I'd say if your bike has a kick stand then you're probably "bicycling" and if it doesn't you're probably "running", at least as it relates to the level of exercise in that survey.

That could be the reason why you see so many fat cyclists, because it is about as effective for weight loss as doing the Ironing
