Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Titanium Panasonic

Has anyone heard about or ridden the new titanium Panasonic FCT09? The only info I can find about the bike is in Japanese, and I'm curious to hear what others have to say about it.

The homepage lists the frame price as 240,000 yen, which is about $2,200.

It comes in horizontal and sloping versions (homepage only shows sloping). I recently saw one here in Tokyo, and was quite impressed with its looks. I'm curious about its performance, though.

Here's the Japanese homepage:

https://www.panabyc.co.jp/products/pos/fct09.html

Cheers,
T

If you go to Cycle Mode Tokyo in a couple of weeks you will have a good chance to ride one. I saw them at Cycle Mode Osaka last year and they are beautiful. They have been available for quite awhile. They are order made only.

Thanks! I had in fact planned on going to Cycle Mode. Hopefully, I'll be able to throw my leg over one of these beauts.

Tip: take your own helmet, it saves a load of time for the test rides.

Because it takes so long to pick the lice out of the loaner helmets?

Gross. Sorry about that. Thanks for the tip! Is there any need to bring my own pedals?

I think this (i.e., fear of being seen as riding a home electronics product) is the reason the Panasonic I saw was debadged. Personally, I think the name is refreshingly industrial. Or something.

You know, Panasonic has been making bike frames since 1951.

Good ones, too. I'd love to have one of the high-end Panasonic road or track frames to build up with Suntour Superbe.

Given the weight of the frame and how big the downtube looks, I think the downtube will be relatively easy to dent when hit from the side.

I was seriously considering their steel racing frame FCC19 for a bit, but couldn't justify the $1000+ price tag. Would also love to get my hands on an older DX-4000 or 5000 for a song, if I could.

Interesting. Are you basing this view on experience? Do Cannondale oversize aluminum tubes tend to
dent easily? Would the fact that the material is Ti offset some of the danger of denting? Just curious.

Just to make you want one more, the street price for the FTC09 is 180,000 yen. The FTC19 is 120,000, making both pretty sweet deals for a titanium frame. Been riding a FTC06 since 2001 and can say the quality is absolutely top notch. I wish more people in Japan would ride Panasonics instead of Colnagos and Pinarellos.

Whoa! How does one obtain an FTC09 at "street price"? Does that mean my LBS (in Chiba, by the way) will be able to score one for that amount?

Glad to hear you are enjoying yours! I am *very* close to pulling the trigger.

Thanks for the info!
