Nike Cycling Shoes?
I got a pair of Nike Alpin III's with carbon soles, etc etc the other day for about 1/3 of new cost because it's the off-season, etc etc...
...now I'm reading reviews on the internet and hearing that they are possibly known for cracking easily, etc. Not what I wanted to hear, even if I got a good deal. I started looking around and thinking about it and realized that I don't think I've ever really seen someone riding with Nike cycling shoes -- this might be a result of the fact that I know a lot of looks-oriented and/or politically-minded people who wouldn't be caught dead wearing them... ...but is there anything inherently inferior about these shoes? Should I take them back? Thanks in advance! (And apologies if this is the wrong forum.) |
Can't speak for the Alpins, but I use a pair of Nike Gregarios that I got for $12 on sale at a Supergo store before they changed into a Performance. I've been very happy with the shoes. especially for the price. I'm not sure why Nike shoes aren't seen more often.

I have a pair of the Lance IIs, and they are amazing shoes. I got them for $60 and it was a great deal. Mine have carbon soles and are not cracked at all, and I have used the hell out of them. I think you made a fine purchase.

My understanding was that Nike ended their deal with Trek because they only wanted to sell high end cycling equipment. I believe they will still make shoes at least. If you noticed the Disco guys wore white Nike shoes that are not on the market yet. I gathered that Nike was saving those for a separate product line.
I have Nike Poggios but I don't wear them because they are too narrow for me. |

I have Nike Poggios but I don't wear them because they are too narrow for me. Nike does not make their own shoes. Nike does not feel that there is enough of a market to keep going. That's why there are kickbutt deals on Nikes...everyone wants to get rid of them. Simply put. |
My LBS said, Nike will be out of the bike shoe business in 2008.

I had a pair of the 10//2 carbons. I got them free with a big Nike kit I got for a coaching gig. They retailed for $300 and were identical to those that Lance wore in his last Tour, other than the 10//2 branding.
I did NOT like them. I loved the carbon sole, but the rest of the shoe sucked. The buckle has a lower TPI than Sidi and it doesn't have the double/half ratchet. The piece that goes over the top is a big plastic sheet that doesn't conform to your foot at all. The insole had a higher density patch over the cleat area, which developed a high-spot when you wore it, which quickly turned into a hot spot. The heel cups are really wide and poorly formed, and they scratched up my crank. I honestly can't see how Lance could deal with them year after year. I wore them for about 8 months because I couldn't let go of the carbon soles (previously rode Genius 2s). Finally, the right deal on some carbon Sidis hit Craigslist. I bought the Sidis for $50 and sold the Nikes for $75 ;) Now I have it all: world-class upper, and carbon over my cleat (not a full CF sole -- but stiff where it needs to be). |
I had a set of nike cycling shoes in the early nineties. They were floppy, but cheap!
