Now I know what a real bike shop is!

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Now I know what a real bike shop is!

I went to a new place yesterday. Sicklers in Kingston PA.
They had about 40 road bikes on hand.
I talked to the sales man (Jay) and the owner for about 20 minutes and they pulled 2 bikes out and set them up side by side on trainers (Scott-$600 and Cannondale-$750) after about an hour total on both bikes with fit and conversation on the bikes, Jay's next words where "time to hit the street." I thought that was awesome! I liked the Cannondale more ('06 synapse 7) it has all 105 and shifted a lot smoother. He also pulled a '08 out of the basement (still needs to be assembled) that has the outboard bearings but lower component group for $300 more.
So now I have to go to the other bike shop with the Specialized Allez Elite and test ride that so I can finally make a decision.

By the way, that was my first time on a road bike and as you already know, it is an awesome feeling.

Nothing like great service...

And nice to see a shop with bikes still on the floor...

Most of the shops near me have skis and snowboards out...

Bikes are in the basement...

This place only does bikes
They also have a room filled with spinning bike for a class
They plan on opening a new place in the spring that will include a coffee bar as well.

Hero, the above post was a joke about most salesman not being very helpful.

I think I finally found the LBS I want to work with the other day too. I took a wheel in that I bought from REI and it needed a touch of truing. The guy fixed it in a couple minutes and didn't charge me a thing for it. Gotta love that!

If you want your bike shop to love you, take them food every now and then.

I took that the wrong way at first--like "hit the road".

I love LBS's like that.

My LBS is absolutely insane. They do free tuning for a year. Generally any minor tuning they'll do for free after that. They completely rebuild all the bikes they receive from the company before they sell them, and they don't skimp on anything. Sometimes they put free upgrades on a bike (got a Trek 5000 with ultegra front and rear deraliers). They gave me a free pro fitting. I get anywhere between 10%-25% discounts. They teach me everything I need to know about bikes. Freakin' amazing.

Mine too. I do need to bring them some Thanksgiving beer, and make a note to do the same for holiday cheer.

Same here.
Free fit
10% off everything in the store for life
Free adjustments for as long as I own the bike.
Plus all the bikes (they're showroom has approximately 800 bikes in it (I counted once)) and expertise a man could want.

Almost as important as the bike is the LBS (Local Bike Shop). They will treat you right and take care over fitting the right size bike to you.
