Recommend a cheap road bike
Can a decent road bike be had for $350 or less? I'm a size 50-54, and I need gears. I know this is funny to most of you who can afford kick ass stuff, but answer nicely anyway. Thanks.

You might want to define "decent" and "need gears."

Old 7 speeds with down tube shifters such as Trek's epoxy bonded aluminum series run in that range. They are still very nice bikes.

A year and a half ago I gave away a "decent" bike with "gears".
I'm glad I did because the guy I gave it to (I work with him), has put 3K miles on it, and is now 40 lbs lighter.
It's an '86 vintage Performance Superbe Pro road bike with Tange #1 tubing, Suntour Superbe Pro group (7 speed, downtube shifters), and Campy clinchers wheels.
Ask around (especially any friends who bike). If you are lucky, you might find someone like me (who rides lots, and has accumulated an extra bike or two), that would love to see an extra bike being ridden.
They might cut you a deal.

You might find a deal at a bike consignment store too, if one exists in your area.
Here in Vancouver there is such a store that has many, many previously loved and unloved bikes. And the price drops every week until they sell. What they may be lacking in aesthetics, with some tuning, they may make up for in overall satisfaction and performance. That might work for you too.
