Lake CX400
Does anyone have this shoe? http://www.lakecycling.com/ProductIn...roductid=CX400
It's Lake's regular Look pattern custom moldable road shoe. I've got a chance to get them for less than my crappy Sidi's, and they'd be pretty affordable for me. I've been needing new shoes for a little while now because I've apparently got really wierd feet and the Sidi's felt fine at the LBS, but 30 miles into a ride, I can feel my arches start to ache. I'm even using Superfeet grey's and two Specialized grey shims and while it's helping, it's not doing the trick. Okay, so, to the main question. For those of you who own these, did you use the oven that Lake has to heat them up? And if so, couldn't I just do the same thing in a household oven? Because if I bought these, I'd have to shell out even more money for an oven because it only comes free if 5+ pairs are ordered. P.S: For you Speedplay weenies out there, they've got the same model with a 4 bolt Speedplay pattern. |
Our elite team used them this past year. They approved.
Just don't plan on doing a lot of walking in them. |
Do you know how durable they found them? For some reason, the Boa system doesn't seem to be super durable, but I could be wrong. Anyways, I don't think I'm going to walk too much in them, they look unsafe for that.
|
Nobody had any problems with general durability with them, as far as I know. Their closure system is the same as used by Specialized, and everyone raves about those. The main problem is that the carbon sole comes up pretty high on the outside of the heel, as an integrated heel cup. If you crash and slam that into the ground while doing so, say "Bye Bye" to the shoe. So it's a doubled edged sword, really. Great in one way (comfort, heel stability) and bad in another (potential weak point of the shoe).
|
I was just looking at some Specialized's today and noticed that the wire that's used in the Boa system is actually shifting cable. I now have no worries about durability of that. I use brake cable on my E-brake in my car.
Thanks for the info, I think I'm going to take a leap, hopefully the Lake oven isn't 100% needed to mold them. |
The shoes fit incredibly-well, but are simply not durable:

That was a pretty rough crash though, boss.
|
I'd say crashing a track bike is going to be particularly hard on shoes considering the inability to coast coupled with the shoes being directly attached to the bike.
|
Oh, I've crashed on the track before. I've never had a broken sole... Broken in places where it shouldn't be. The damage to the outside of the shoe was similar to what would happen in a sliding crash on the road. The Boa enclosure adjustment wheel also separated from the shoe.

I've owned a pair of CX400s for about a year and a ½. Prior to buying a pair of custom D2s, they were the most comfortable shoe I've owned (or tried on). You name the brand, and it's been on my foot. The kangaroo leather upper is incredibly comfortable. They run narrow in the heel, so even if you have an "average" foot, you may want to try a wide just to be sure. For me, the medium fits my skinny heel great.
I did get the heat shaping (I think you can use a regular oven; you can call Lake's CS and ask). A few initial buyers at my LBS complained that the heat fit gave a little too much of an "aggressive" fit, so from what I heard, most just wear them stock. Of course, with shoes, YMMV. |
