Crazy LBS Price?

I was looking at a road bike at a LBS I have never visited before and asked about their groupsets.

Me: "So, how much would your 10 speed Dura ace group cost?"

He goes to the computer to look up the price of the 8 piece grouppo

"About three thousand dollars"

.......

Me: "Oh, I meant JUST the groupset - not the groupset + the bike" (since we were just talking about the bike earlier)

"That's what I mean!!! $3200 dollars for just the groupset"

.......
.......
.................

I didn't even want to ask for the price of the Ultegra bike I was holding upright....

The salesman seemed pretty cool though, answering a bunch of my questions - but at a price like that how can they expect ANY customers???

roy5000x2 11-18-07 08:39 PM

trust me dude, if you get into cycling big time, you don't think too much about spending a couple thousand on components.

Bike enthusiast 11-18-07 08:42 PM

Well, it's that I just spent under a grand to get full dura ace brand new..... on ebay it's around $1100..... BUT $3000????

fly:yes/land:no 11-18-07 08:45 PM

he must have been confused. it is not that much. even if you had the carbon crank, i don't think it would be that much.

Bike enthusiast 11-18-07 08:49 PM

That's what I thought, I had to ask him half a dozen times - he even went back to the computer to triple check it! But that was the price they had for me..... He couldn't do anything about it.

Bike enthusiast 11-18-07 08:50 PM

I hung around for about an hour to get to know them and the bike.... Then I told them about PBK... Man, am I mean.... :( I feel so bad....

You should support LBSs regardless of price.

Good. I'll open an LBS near you. Be sure to stop by and pick up the $100,000 Tiagra group I'll be selling.

F'en Hilarious!

The thing is the guy probably just added up list price for everything, not giving you a deal for buying the whole set like you get on pbk/coloradocyclist etc. Maybe he included DA wheels in that? Who knows

Bike enthusiast 11-18-07 09:06 PM

Yeah, MUST HAVE been. No one could sell D/A that high... I wish I had taped it though - seen the expression of my face.... Me telling him he was mistaken a thousand times....

At that price you'll only have to sell one group and you'll be set.

I was being facetious. Does this make more sense?

"You should support LBSs regardless of price."

I forget internet users need smileys to pick up on sarcasm.

patentcad 11-18-07 09:15 PM

That's the price for a full Dura Ace Group/Eightball of Cocaine Signature Gruppo. I do recommend that particular one by the way. Clear your weekend calendar immediately after purchase however.

Regardless, Woo's comment was hilarious. Apparently you didn't catch the sarcasm there too.

When he went to the computer he was actually checking to see if bikesdirect still had any of those $1595 DuraAce Motobecanes that he could strip and still make 100% profit on just the group.

roy5000x2: There are plenty of us who have been in cycling for a long time that know you don't need to spend thousands to have a good ride.

Chris_F 11-19-07 11:32 AM

Ask him if they'll give you a refund or store credit for returning an item you didn't buy from them...

Don't those MBs have Cane Creek brakes, though?

You could pick up a Dura ace equipped Cannodale road bike for less than that.

kudude 11-19-07 12:30 PM

you don't buy a groupset from your LBS. don't you know that?

the ultegra bike you were holding was most likely reasonably priced. "about $3k" may mean $2700, and he had no intentions of selling it to you. add up the MSRP's and add in some shipping or something. $450 for the crank, $500 for the brifters, $300 for the brakes, $170 for the RD, $70 for the FD, $150 for the cassette, $800 for the wheels, the rest for the "stupid" tax (which is different from the sales tax)....... blah blah blah.

Too lazy to check. Maybe he'd need to hit up PBK for the brakes?

Hobartlemagne 11-19-07 02:02 PM

Speak to the manager and haggle. Show him the PBK price, and ask how close the LBS can get to that price.
