Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What makes a jersey a good fit?

I just received some size medium Canari jerseys in the mail and I'm not sure if the fit is quite right. They are a bit loose, definitely not skin tight.

In general, is skin tight the most desired and/or best fit for jerseys, or should there be a bit of looseness?

skin tight works for a skinsuit.

it may be a tad too tight for a jersey. that said, i prefer tight to loose.

many a fred on the forum will suggest otherwise.

snug is the desired result.

I like them generally tight, but they have to be long enough that they don't work their way up when you ride.

They should be comfortably skin tight, and you should be able to move and lift your arms up over your head without fabric pinching or tightness.
On the other hand, they should not be too loose as to have flapping while riding and no bunch marks.
The rear pocket area will be a little more loose (slightly) on high quality jerseys.
I ride Pearl Izumi's and Descent and the fit is conforming although not blood flow tight.

To me this thread is along the lines of "what do you prefer boxers, briefs, or nothing?"... in other words it should be your personal choice as opposed to what someone else might think is right. I won't get into the "factors" that help make that choice....

Which Canari? I've got two of their mediums that fit well until I lost 25 lbs this summer. Now, the shoulders still fit but the rest is too baggy and long. I'm 5' 8.5" & now weigh 177. From past experiences, I'm usually too wide in the shoulders (regardless of my state of extra padding....err, fat) to wear smalls. So while I like the fabric and construction of the Canari's, I'll be looking at some other brands if/when I get new jerseys.

In contrast, I've got an Italian-made jersey from a charity ride that says Medium but fits skin tight neck-to-hem to the point that I had to cut the seams on the sleeve cuffs (and it sure ain't because of my biceps). [And being off topic a bit, at least I can actually wear that jersey at my lower weight.]

Once I got used to the tight fit, I prefer it to something overly loose. If I'm just riding for me, I'll take the tight one. If I'm meeting friends and getting coffee or lunch after the ride, I'll wear the looser one to be polite.

What I find irritating is every brand fit's different.

And I have no boobs to worry about.

Snug yet relaxed

Tight yet unrestrictive

Loose but not detached

Compressive but not unyielding

You forgot "laterally stiff yet vertically compliant".

i just got in from a 30 minute test ride with one of the new canari jerseys i got and it was definitely doing the flapping thing. not a whole lot, but definitely enough that i think it would eventually bug me.

i guess i'll try to exchange them for a smaller size. good thing i got them from sierratradingpost.com since their returns tend to be pretty easy.

anyone know how pearl izumi jerseys fit relative to canari? a couple PI jerseys caught my eye on their site.

PI has the fat cut, go down a size or two.
