The moments I love in cycling

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The moments I love in cycling

1. Riding with the sun at my back and I look down to see my shadow swaying in rhythm to my pedal stroke on the bike.

2. Breathing in for 4 pedal strokes, breathing out for 4 pedal strokes. Number of strokes varies on my cadence.

3. Accelerating from a dead stop and getting to speed then locking my butt into the seat and connecting with the bike.

4. Preparing myself for a hill by down shifting. Then once I get in a rhythm I find myself upshifting and accelerating up the hill.

5. Getting in a paceline inches off the wheel in front of me and banging away at 30+ mph. Then my turn comes at the front, my field of vision opens up, my legs pump harder to maintain speed, and my heart beat rises.

Those are some of my favorite moments. Except for the last two I really like feeling connected to the bike somehow and performing like a machine. What're your moments that you really enjoy? Not moments like, "going down this one hill you can see over the city for 5 seconds through the trees." I mean moments that can happen on pretty much any ride and are more about the experience of being a cyclist.

I love attacking climbs out of the saddle. There's just something really cool about dancing on the pedals, with the bike swaying back and forth underneath you as you fly up the hill.

Your rides must be really expensive if that is what you're looking forward to in them.

So many to choose from. I can really relate to your "connected to the bike". Also:

- Riding solo early morning and watching the city waking up around me.

- Standing up and "dropeing the hamer" on inclines which I could hardly granny up a few months ago.

That point after riding the "work" part of a ride, and realizing that it wasn't that bad. You know, the stuff that would have had me puking and crying when I was the fat guy on the couch last year.

The self satisfied feeling I get when I arrive at work feeling full of energy, legs feeling pumped and seeing my overweight colleagues look like sh*t...

The moment I realize my warmup is over and first feel really good on my bike that day. Takes too long to get there though.

You may be right, but would BF even continue to exist without us

Unfortunately, BF is like bike schwag: no matter how much you get, it's never enough.

I can quit any time I want, really

The "whip-ting" sound of the chain dropping to the small ring at the base of a huge climb. It reminds me instantly of my most painful attacking moments and sobers me up for the challenge ahead.

My best cycling moment of the year was escorting (and encouraging) a new cyclist up Mt. Evans... she'd only been riding for 3 months, and took on a 14 mile, 4,000+ foot climb ending at 14,260 feet elevation...

Her goal starting out was to see how far she could get before turning around, but she made it all the way up.

The look on her face when we rounded the last switchback and it leveled off into the parking lot at the summit was AWESOME.

that first really nice spring day when everyone is out on their bikes, and you see all the people you haven't seen since last fall...
