Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ksyrium Elite Wheelset from Nashbar for $319.88

Please forgive my noobocity, this will be my first bike build and pretty much all I know about bikes I've learned from bikeforums.net.

I just got a Bianchi Giro frame and I'm going to need some wheels for it (and everything else for that matter).

I just saw these Ksyrium Elite wheels on nashbar.com.
front for $159.99
rear (campy) for $169.99

After tax, shipping, and the 20% off coupon, the total comes to $319.88. Should I jump on it?

I'm in no real rush to buy, just wondering if this a "mega deal". Thanks

Oh, and Happy Turkey Day to all.

They look like the 06 model but i would say they are a good deal at that price considering that we sell the 07/08 set new at our shop for $600.

Umm, make sure you're matching the rear wheel hub to the drive train you plan to use. Campy is for campy, "M10" (Shimano) is for Shimano and SRAM.

FWIW, I've got a set of elite's that have been pretty much bombproof. They're not the greatest wheels out there, but they make an OK every day wheel. Also look at the open pros.

Anybody think this is a better deal than, say, Reynolds Solitudes for $300?

$320 is a good deal for the Elites. The pictures indicate silver but nothing in the copy confirms that is what is available - which is unusual - and there appears to be no choice in the selection menu. I'd confirm this before ordering as it certainly wouldn't be the first time they showed one thing when only the other was available.

Or did this model year (06, '07?) only come in silver?

They're not the lightest and certainly not the stiffest wheelset out there but are an extremely nice riding wheelset that can take as much abuse as just about anything else out there. At that price, you can't go wrong, there's nothing close in that price range.

Yea, and you don't need rims strips.

Alone, worth the $300, god I hated dealing with rim strips.

Yeah, i'm thinking a campy centaur build for my Bianchi Giro so I would need a campy compatible wheelset. Performance has Open Pros with Record hubs (front, rear) for about $350 total after their 20% off coupon and tax (free shipping to a store). Is that the better buy? I really have no idea. I mean, I could justify an extra $30 if it was unquestionably the better wheelset. Oh no, I just threw the term "better" out there.

Just a "good deal", huh? Not a "mega deal"?

I have the Elites (with about 2000 miles on them)and a set of Open Pro's (with Record hubs). The Open Pro's ride a little smoother (I've compared them back to back with everything else constant)....meaning that they don't transmit as much road vibration. Also, the spokes for the Open Pros are going to be commonly available.

Well, I pulled the trigger. I got the rear Mavic Ksyrium Elite from nashbar.com for $165.08 and the front Mavic Ksyrium Elite from sierratradingpost.com for $124.77.

Total of $289.85 for the wheelset. I'm pretty happy about that.

Now I must put down the credit card, that little sucker has been a bit too active here lately.

Thanks to all of you for the input.
