Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Edge 605

Or the 705. Any opinions? I did search but nothing came up. I read some reviews but was wondering what people with hands on experience think.

Thanks.

I have the 305 model with cadence and HR monitor. It is one of if not the best bike computer I've ever had, and the GPS feature sure is a nice thing. Garmin's website mentions 1st quarter of 2008 for the 605 and 705 to be released for sale (https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=160&pID=10884). Based on the experience I had with the 305, I will get me a 705 definitely.

The nice thing about the 605 and 705 is that you can use wireless power meters with them. SRM and Power tap are two of the companies working with Garmin.

Places are pre-selling the 605 and 705. They won't be available until Jan., 2008.

For the features go with a 705. 605 is not even really much of a step up from the 305. They all use the same accessories so I actually bought a 305 last night - due to the $75 rebate that is still good through Nov 30.

I figure I will use it for about a year and then buy a 705 after Garmin works the bugs it always has out of the new product. Then pick up the 705 for cheaper - price always drops in the first year, and won't need to buy the cadence version - just use the cadence sensor from the 305.

Power meter compatibility is just on the 705, and the companies working with Garmin are Quarq and SRM.

Cool, so they've been of a couple of years? Should be able to find a good deal, then.

right. good luck with that.

These have been delayed due to production issues. I would be very wary of being among the first to get one. Spring 09 at best.

But then again, there are countless idiots who buy the latest computer OS then spend months complaining about why they don't work.

DocRay calls it IMHO. Still though, it's an interesting product and I find it odd that there are no reviews (from the rags, PEZ, etc.) out there and it's being pre-sold in some places for $100 below MSRP.

What is the battery life supposed to be with the 605? The main complaint that people had with the Edge 305 was poor battery life.

There is a comparison of the 205, 305, 607 and 705 here, although, being the manufacturers web site the specs may not match real world usage.

I read an online review from somewhere that actually got one of the pre-production units.

The December date for shipment was their original target, but Garmin announced a month or 2 ago that they were not going to make that shipment date, and that the units would not be shipping before Christmas as they had hoped.

Geoman is putting early Jan as the official line they are receiving from Garmin, but seem to imply that might also be wishful thinking.

All said an done I was able to score the 305 at an extremely low price and still use the $75 rebate that is good through Nov. 11 - putting the HR+CAD bundle under $200. I figure I'll use it for a year or 2 while Garmin works out the inevitible bugs that they seem to have with everything they make - then score a 705 at a a price just South of highway robbery.

Oh...and battery life on the 605 and 705 is listed at 15hrs - 5hrs longer than the listed life on the 305, but as we have all heard "your results may vary."

Lots of info on the Garmin site itself for those that can spend 5 minutes away from BF.

battery life claims on the 305 certinly were bunk. I get about 7 or 8, tops, using the cadence sensor. on my tour i used a mintyboost (a kit i found about here). it worked GREAT, uses 2 AA batteries. I DO want the mapping. Im getting a 705 eventually, it looks like it has the same usb charge receptacle that the 305 has, so a mintyboost is the ticket

Agree with you guys about waiting for Garmin to iron out the bugs before taking the plunge.

Looking at the different 605/705 packages on the Garmin website presents quite an array of options. Would those of you who have the 305 already recommend any particular set up (i.e. is it worth getting the cadence and heart rate or should I keep using Polar HRM and not worry about cadence)?

Secondly, has anyone used the existing Garmin units on different continents? I will prob be using in US and Europe so any tips on the ease of switching between the two would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Ben

I had a ebay seller tell me they would be released on the 31 December but do not know if that is true or not,

The new models 605 & 705 have a li-polymer battery where as the 205 & 305 have a lithium-ion so the battery will definitely last longer but hard to imagine it lasting the 15hrs they claim it will

I have a 305 and will definitely get a 705. But, it will probably be a few months. I was talking to Garmin customer service mid November about maps of Japan to use with one of their hand held GPS units. They told me that it could be the end of the first quarter of 2008, which would make it March.

Not sure that this will make the battery last longer since the screens on the 605 and 705 are color, which usually takes more power. I get 7-8 hours on my 305 with everything running, I'd be fine if that's what the 605 and 705 provided especially when working with a power meter.

I get about 10 out of my 305. I have to carry a charger for double centuries, but other than that I've never had a problem with it. Even if their 15 hours really just gives me 12 that's plenty for me, and I won't have to carry the charger anymore.
