Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycleops Fluid 2 ticking sound?

I have a new (only about a month old) Cycleops Fluid 2 trainer that seems to have a ticking sound. When in use, it clicks on each revolution and sounds kind of like the freewheel pawls when you are coasting. I checked the trainer while it was it use and made sure that nothing external was contacting any of the moving parts. Has anyone else experienced this?

BTW: I have already contacted Saris/Cycleops and have a return authorization. I just wanted to see if someone has a simple solution so that I don't have to go to the trouble/expense/wait to ship it back.

I bought a used Fluid 2 and after using it for about 8 months, I too experienced a ticking sound. I contacted Saris to ask if there was any way that I could fix the problem myself. They told me that they were aware of the problem but it could only be fixed by them because special tools were required. I tried poking around a bit but couldn't find the problem so I sent it back to them. They sent me a replacement unit and charged me $85 (I wasn't the original owner so it wasn't under warranty).

I'm pretty surprised that you experienced this problem too because the customer rep I spoke with said the problem was somewhat common among the older units. I inferred that they fixed the problem in the newer units, but who knows? Is your current resistance unit the newer model with the yellow handle to adjust tire contact pressure?

Yes it is - Like I said, I've only had it for about a month.

Did you need to provide a serial number for that? I just bought one and I want to send in the warranty card, but I can't find the serial number. Do you know where it would be?

Also, I have not experienced the problem you mentioned, though at times mine does get a bit noisy, but it goes away pretty quick.

No, the customer service rep didn't ask for a serial number. I haven't looked for a serial number, so I don't know where it's located.

That's your trainer's way of saying "you should have bought a KK".

Make sure drum is clean also.

I have had noises go away by going at a different cadence.

Cycleops Fluid 2 ticking sound

I have had my trainer, with yellow handle, for 2 winters now and love it. Last week it developed a ticking sound like the one described by the other user here. I just spoke with customer service and got a "3 step" procedure to try and correct the issue.
It is after removing bike from trainer:

Step 1 - Loosen allen screw (hole in roller the bike tire rides against).
Step 2 - Tighten nut on fly wheel 1/4 turn.
Step 3 - Tighten allen screw.

If clicking is not gone repeat to a maximum of 2 more times. If you have tightened nut to 3/4 turns (3 sequences of these steps) STOP and call customer service.

I am working on mine tonight 3/2/2011 and will update this with results.

Hope this helps

Update 3/7/11 - This did solve the clicking noise.

If under warranty why try fixing it and taking the chance of messing up your warranty? I had an issue with mine, called CycleOps. In my case to match up with my bike I needed a different Action Bolt. I got it two days later no charge and did not have to send the old one back. You can't beat their service.

I did call Cycleops and this is what they, customer service, wanted me to do before giving me a return code to send mine back. This did solve the clicking noise on mine. As with all things, some situations are not the same so if you have questions call Cycleops first.
