Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Here is a pic of the 3rd Eddy Merckx that I own.. I still have to take pics of my Frankie Andreu Motorola Team bike.. I bought this last year on CL.. It is a late 80's Corsa Extra - SLX.. The owner had it repainted, it came with Record 10 mix w/ Campy Eurus wheels, Mavic Brakes - C-record crankset - Mavic Headset, Cinelli Bar/Stem.. The bike is smooth and rides incredible..

Maybe I'd pass on the stem and bars, but this is one terrific bike!

Wow, not one but two stunning steel bicycles! Very nice.

I do wish the Merckx had internal cable routing or at least underneath the TT...wish there wasn't anything covering up that frame/paint.

Nice rides, very nice

here is a pic of the yates bikes from early 90's.. The pic is grainy because digital cameras back then were terrible.. Taken with an apple quicktake, .3 megapixel max..

1987 Tempo -- mine since new, evolved with take off bits from other bikes. Use it for rainy days and days when I just want to ride a steel bike.

Here's an updated pic of my steel framed ("Extra Legere" Supervitus 980 tubing) 84 Peugeot PSV...this time with Mavic GL330 tubular wheels and latex (naked) sidewalled sewup tires. Makes a big difference in looks for C&V bikes.

The tire companies should really bring back latex sidewalled clincher tires. All black tires just don't look good IMO.

I'm in. Here's yet another post-ride photo of my old trusty rusty steel steed. It's built on a 1990 Maruishi Tange #2 frame with 7sp Ultegra. The Open4 Sport rims and SPD-SL pedals are new acquisitions this past summer owing to the wearing-out of previous components. It's beat up and scratched up beyond belief, but it gets me from start to finish very nicely, especially with the new wheels. Most recent change was to lose the 42T inner in favor of a 39T, in deference to creeping chronology and general recent out-of-shape-ness.

One nice thing about a steelie: the other guys in the group I was riding with could not trip a traffic light sensor loop with their carbon fiber wonderbikes. No problem for me

My '83 Puch Odyssey isn't as nice as most of these, but I have had it since new and still like riding it! It has been upgraded with a NOS Suntour Cyclone MKII RD and NOS Cyclone downtube shifters, Nitto bars and Kalloy seatpost. The brakes are the original Dia-Compes, but the suicide levers have been removed and hoods added. A couple months ago, a friend gave me his old Campy parts he no longer used along with a couple sets of rims, so she now rides on Campy Record hubs laced to Mavic Open Sport rims. The freewheel is a Suntour Winner Pro 13-18 corncob, which looks kind of out of place with the GT derailleur! Someday I need to get a better seat, but the boat biz sucks right now so it will have to wait. Originally a 30 pounder, now just under 25.

Since this picture was taken, I have replaced the stem with a NOS Sakae 120mm. Now I can stretch out a little!

'97 Pinarello Vuelta w/ Pinarello ARX proprietary tubing (probably already in this thread a time or two). Equipped w/ '09Campy Centaur and '09 Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheels.

Surly LHT w/4130. Fairly typical modern touring bike drivetrain, etc. I built the wheels: XT hubs, Velocity Cliffhanger rims, 36 spokes front/rear.

'09 Jamis Aurora Elite w/Reynolds 631. Probably the best combination for my road riding, honestly. A fairly light frame with touring geometry, with a 105/Ultegra triple drivetrain. I built the wheels: Ultegra hubs, Mavic CXP 33 rims, 36 spokes rear/32 spokes front.

(sorry for the mtb pic in the road forum, but I love this bike). Jamis Dragon 29 built up from a frameset and mostly NOS parts I had laying around, XT all the way except the brakes, which are Avid BB7's. I built the wheels: Mavic TN719 rims, XT hubs, 36 spokes front/rear.
