The "JunkYard X" build begins...

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The "JunkYard X" build begins...

Still not sure if that will be the final name, but call it a working title for now.

Many of you recall, the JunkYard Dog. Bare aluminum Scattante road frame/fork, Open Pros, Ultegra... Pieced together for about $600. Can be seen terrorizing local races/rides here by generally looking ugly. Sticker on the chainstay says, "West Linn Gun and Bible Club".

Got my 20% Performance coupon and started on an equally ugly, but functional cross bike to replace the MTB I've been using.

The basic concept is an old school CX racer / commuter / winter bike. 9-speeds with barends. Single ring in front. Should go about 20lbs. ready to go.

So far:

- Titan Wheelset. $119 minus 20% = $95 - 10% Team Perf. bucks = $85.50
- Scattante frame/fork $300 - 20% = 240 - 10% Team Perf bucks = $216
- Old XTR crankset - garage inventory
- XTR BB - garage inventory
- Bars/Stem/Seatpost/Saddle = Price Point $120
- SPD 520 Pedals - Garage Inventory
- DA 9 Speed Barcons - $55 ebay
- 12-32 rear cassette - garage inventory
- XT cantilevers (circa 1996) - garage inventory
- XT rear deraileur - garage inventory

That's where we are now. Need a cheap set of regular brake levers. Old Ultegra or some of the new Cane Creeks. Should be ready to race for under $500.
