Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Gel flask questions

I decided to start using a gel flask and was wondering if I need to empty the bottle every time or if I can leave any unused gel in the flask until my next ride? If I can leave it in the flask, do I need to refrigerate it or anything? Finally, How often should I clean it? Thanks in advance.

I just wipe down the outside to make sure it is not sticky and throw it in the fridge. I never clean mine out. I get a new one with each jar of Hammer Gel so I just throw the old one away when I get a new jar. One tip, get it out of the fridge a few minutes before the ride so that it can warm up and become less viscous.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but I just ordered my first flask with some gel, and I got a flask holder on my bike. How do you all carry your flasks. Jersey pocket? Camelbak? Mount on frame? I would also like to hear about cleaning and storing excess gel. Thanks.

Jersey pocket is how I have always carried mine. That is one bad thing about old gel flasks, sometimes they leak into your pocket, but the gel generally washes out pretty well.

You get a new one with each bottle? Man, I've been using mine for years.

If it's still partly full, rinse off the outside and throw it in the fridge. When you empty it, wash it. Keeping it it the jersey pocket works great.

I figured I'd put it in the jersey pocket, although it looked smaller on the website. I bought a soft flask and got a hard one free with my order, so we'll see how well both work. Thanks for the tips. I'll keep it in the fridge and maybe wash it out with each new jug or before changing flavors.

Hard flask is made of a harder plastic, more like a water bottle. The soft flask is kind of like a toothpaste tube.
