Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bars Designed for STI

I know there are some bars out there specifically designed for use with Shimano STI. I read about them here but the search is broken (go figure).

Do you mean bars with the built-in cable groove? That's all I can think of.

There are some that have a bend designed to flow with STI hoods. I'm pretty sure whoever makes them also has a set for ergo shifters.

You probably mean the Deda Supernatural: https://www.competitivecyclist.com/za...MODE=&TFC=TRUE

I've had these for a couple of months and so far am very happy with them, though I think that is more because I like the bend than the particular match (Ultegra shifters); I don't know that the difference in transition from top to shifter is that different (though I'll admit not trying that many bars) than other bars.

edit: According to the CC link, they are the Shimano version of the Newtons.

Hmmm....I'm not having any issues with Dura_ace shifters on a Newton handlebar.

Nice to know there's still a way to make my setup even better....

i have supernaturals on both of my bikes, but as stated above, it is because i like the bends. doesn't really have anything to do with how they mate to the brifters. i ride in the drops a lot, and these bars fit my wrists better than others

I have never heard of this, and it sounds a bit like marketing.

Nahh, what happened was, Giuseppe saw one of those hottie Italian chicks as he was walking across the factory floor, and dropped the mold for the Newtons. It got bent it up a little bit, but it was still useable, so the manager said, "Hey-a guys...don-a cry! We can-a tell-a dem it's-a 'design-a for de Shimano' (chorus of laughter from other factory workers)"

The curvature of a Shimano shifter body vs that of a Campagnolo shifter body is different where they rest on the bars. This is a fact. Deda designs its bars to best match Campagnolo. The Supernatural uses the same materials and construction methods as the Newton but is designed to match best with Shimano.

This is more an issue with Campagnolo in that Campagnolo uses softer resigns in it's shifter bodies, from Chorus on down, than does Shimano. This is relevant because if the clamp is overtightened, it can distort the shifter body and the internal mechanisms will not function as smoothly.

As I mentioned, this more affects Campagnolo (Chorus down) than it does Shimano but, Shimano is not immune to this issue. The truth of the matter is that most bars are designed to the Shiamano bend so it is rarely an issue for Shimano users.
