Shimano and Campagnolo non-compatibility

Situation: I am keen on buying a Campy groupset...is there no way a shimano cluster would work on a campy set up? I know this is a naive and vewry newbie question but the Mirage is on special and if I do buy it, then I have to buy a campag wheelset that defeats the purpose of saving on a groupset....I have always been a shimano customer....I have heard of peeps using a campy front mech on a shimano groupset...just wondering

Many people have had luck just using a Shimano 10 speed cassette with Campy shifters.

Others purchase an aftermarket cassette that fits on Shimano hubs.

I solved the problem with a JTek Shiftmate. Works like a clock.

Multiple options.

The spacing is so similar, you will probably be ok running a shimano cassette on campy shifters. But you can easily just by a Jtek shiftmate for not that much money

There are many ways of doing it.. try the search feature. You'll find 100s of threads like this one.

I'm running an Ultegra 9-speed cassette with Mirage 9-speed Ergo shifters using the JTek Shiftmate. The Shiftmate doesn't really work all that well, though, so I will eventually be getting a Campy cassette, probably in the spring.

If you have the option, why not just go all Campy?

EDIT: Who are all these people successfully using Shiftmates? I have one, and, quite frankly, it sucks. The shifting is inaccurate and inconsistent. I wonder if I have a "bad" one, or something?

Did you flip the wheel in the cage?

There are two positions for different conditions. Mine came set-up in the opposite position relative to what I required and the directions were not particularly clear. I looked at it a couple of times, thinking it was just fine. The shifting was sloppy and imprecise, as one might expect. I figured it out, flipped it and it works just fine. Shifts just like it's not there.

So count me as "one of those people successfully using Shiftmates."

One word: Money

I already have a shimano cluster equipped wheelset and the Veloce groupo seems to be a good price at PBK. Hopefully you only installed your shiftmate wrong and what the others experience is more common so I can save.

cheers!

Hmmm...I'll have to try that. Though I'll be waiting until spring before my bike sees the roads again, so I'll get back to this thread in March.

EDIT: Crikey, I just had a look, and I believe I do have it set up wrong. I don't know why I never caught that when I looked at the instructions. I'll have to change that.
