Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Good question.. Id tell you to call Garmin and ask but they are completely clueless about this device. I called yesterday and the tech I spoke with had never even seen one and didnt know they were shipping.

That is the path I wanted to take. With the REI discount I was able to get the unit with the SD card for less than buying another GPS license for city navigator (I already used the two license that come come with it).

Plus, I did not want to wait for Garmin to release the version without!

As for being able to put them on your own SD card, I was going to test that last night but never got around to it. I did try and add some Topo maps to the card that came with it appeared that it would do it just fine.

Hmm, not owning a Mac I cannot help very much. Did the test page say the install was successfull?

https://www8.garmin.com/products/communicator/test/

Can you browse the unit from the Mac at all? If not maybe the USB drivers need to be installed yet.

Test page comes out great but the unit will not transfer to Garmin training center. Have to manually pull the files off the unit and copy them into training center.

That is correct. I asked about the "In stock" vs. "available on..." and was told. It will be instock but on that date.

I have canceled the order for now.

Thanks for pointing that out.

Wow you got to talk to someone? I called today to ask this question and heard a message that said the current wait time to talk to a CSR was 35 minutes. F that. Glad to hear that I didn't waste even more of my time by waiting to hear back from a clueless rep.

Ah so the nav software comes with two unlocks. I may wait then and see if that's an option for me.

Please let us know if you are messing around and managed to get any map data on a regular (non-garmin) SD card.

Ahh, that test page I linked above was for the Garmin Connect online site, not Training Center.

If you are using Training Center on yourt Mac you may check that you are up to date with any updated versions.

I ordered mine from them either friday or sat. Last night I received an email and tracking number that indicates it is on route, and expected to be here thursday.

By the way, this is my first GPS and Garmin product ever. I don't have a clue as to how they work, the map features, etc. I only want this thing to do 2 things for me:

1. Allow me to plot and upload routes into it os I can go ride anywhere I want with a route plotted ahead of time = out of town, organized centuries, Europe, etc.

2. Allow me to track mileage with the added live benefit of knowing my HR, cadence, and other ride data.

I have a Mac. So, I guess I am looking for a volunteer that is well versed in using the 305 at least to help me out when it gets here if I can't figure it out. Maybe PM me your phone number or volunteer and I'll PM you mine.

FYI - The base map and the Mapsource that ship normally are USA only unless you buy the Eurpean version. You can however buy an additional SD card with Europe to get those maps. I am looking to do this for a trip I am doing next year.

Hi all, lets split this thread up. I created a new thread for tips, tricks, bugs etc here:

https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...50#post6279350

Lets keep this post to those looking to find a unit and topics along those lines as it was originally started.

Ordered mine on Friday 2/29 says it will be at the Pineville store tomorrow. I am out of town returning Thursday morning, I think I will stop at the store on the way home from the airport to pick it up.

Did you have the original plugin for Motionbased installed?

You have to delete the old agent plugin (I forget the name of it)

It'll be in Library/Internet Plug-Ins/

The one you want to keep is GarminGpsControl.plugin <-- that's communicator

Just an FYI for those looking to buy it still -

It appears REI wised up and the 15% coupon no longer applies. That means $649 for the deluxe bundle from REI. REI is the only retailer that has it confirmed in stock.

Performance also must have realized a price error, as they adjusted their price on the heartrate+cadence bundle from $549 up to $599. Performance estimates ship dates between march 3rd and march 10th. This may still be the best bet if you have a 10% team performance membership (and can find any active % off coupons to stack ontop of it).

I have been told SportTracks doesn't import from the Edge 705... Need to import into Training Center, then export as a TCX file to import into SportTacks.

I've emailed the author of SportTacks but have received no response yet other than he didn't even know what a Edge 705 was !

When QBP gets them in stock, I might be able to get some about the same price as the REI deal if anyone wants to do a group buy.

Got mine 3/4/08. I got it at the $551 price. I had a 305, this one is much nicer, we'll see how it works,

Youre not now.. they apparently voided the 15% off coupon from applying to the 705.

Wonder how many they sold with that coupon?
