Fredosity is unbearable at times

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Most roadies have come accustomed to occasionally hearing someone yell "FAAAGGG!!!!" at them as they drive past. A large percentage of the population assume you are gay.

Neither is true of freds because people know a chick magnet when they see one. Women want us. Other cyclists want to be like us

In my opinion, the Fred is the guy that does one of two things:

1) Has a blazingly awesome bike, yet knows little of the basic riding skills (like staying in line in a paceline). Then proceeds to make himself seem super elite because he rides with groups and has the "bike" to prove it.

2) Insults him/herself to a ridiculous level. "I'm way too slow; I could never catch up" when in reality they are actually quite fast and drop people occasionally.

A Fred could also be someone who has a striking similarity with Fred Flintstone or a man (or woman) named Fred.

A real woman appreciates how a man rides... not what equipment the man rides with....

But if you're worried I'm a guy, I'm not. But this guy was so hot I'll bet you'd think that, too.

Freds do not need heros to motivate them nor do they get excited one way or the other by successes they played no role in.

Ah yes... doper, doper and doper.

If the definition leans towards guys in baggy pants on Magna and Mongoose MTBs from the department store, there are certainly some cases where I think they are probably a lot stronger than you folks might all think.

Every restaurant in NYC has guys who ride delivery bikes, and I can't even imagine how many miles they must cover in a day, with stuff hanging off them, the bars, or whatever else comes to hand, with a ten pound lock, rushing to keep the tacos from getting cold to make a buck in tip...

Put any of those guys on a decent bike, give him some time to work on technique with some coaching (at most), and I think he could conceivably smoke a lot of the powertap using, heart rate monitor addicted road nazis I see around my neck of the woods...

And if he'd only started playing seriously when he was 7, practiced daily, had his mom hire a personal trainer and been sent to development camps from the age of 8, Lance Armstrong could have conceivably won the Cy Young award this year.

Anyone has the potential to be world class if their genetics are right and they have the killer instinct. Potential is only realised though when it's coupled with a seized opportunity and commitment.

Do you know how many times I have heard this? I say poop.

I have personally tried to help a few guys and seen other bike messengers try to make the transition. Without exception NONE of them ever amounted to anything or stuck with it long enough to get past cat 5 or 4.

First problem is they have to unlearn their totally sketchy riding habits. Second problem is that racing isn't just about physical ability, it's a mindset. You have to have the right kind of personality to do well (for the most part). The guys you describe are typically anti-something or counter-something (or so they believe as they adopt the mannerisms and uniforms that identify them as such) and have a really hard time adapting to the group mentality.

I'm sure there is some guy out there who did make the transition but, based on my experience, they would be the exception.

What does this have to do with being a Fred, anyway?

Should this ever occur, it will be like that Arthur C. Clarke story, the Nine Billion Names of God, and would signal the End of the Universe.

I can't figure out why any self respecting fred would swoon over LA or even have read a copy of Bicycling magazine anytime in his life. How the heck could they get any freddish ideas from those personalities or a publication like that? The whole deal with freds is that they just do what makes sense to them. They do not read magazines to learn to ride nor model themselves after people who they have nothing in common with.
