Tour of Ca. has nothing on the old Coors Light Classics!

If any of you weren't there in the 80's, the new DVD Red Zingers Coors Light Classic is a real treat and a bargain with 12 hrs of footage of high-quality CBS /ESPN coverage for about $50.00.

The CLC eventually evolved into Hawaii, moved eastward to Northern Ca, a stop in Reno NV, and wound up in Colorado for the tortuous mountain stages with a few criteriums thrown in. Davis Phinney was the dominant rider of those races and Lemond, Hampsten, Ron Kiefel, "Smiling" George Mount, Bauer, Eric Heiden and even brief glimpses of young Bob Roll and Chris Charmichael are present/

The ladies races were great also with the greatest female cyclist, Madison WI's own Connie Carpenter (also Phinney's long-time wife) battling Jeanie Longo made for awesome action.:D

Can't understand how the Coors folded. The Tour of California is a real yawner by comparison and it's 20+ years later. I know it's an early year race, but it would it kill those guys to have a mountain top finish? They are world-class pros after all...

The Amgen organizers would really benefit from watching those old races.:)

Wasn't this the one that Kevin Costner's brother won?

DieselDan 01-04-08 08:52 PM

Coors Brewing backed out, opting to fund it's NASCAR team, owned by Harry Melling and driven by Bill Elliott in the mid 80s. Face it, rednecks outdrink cyclists 4-1.

Yep. Kevin Bacon was a domestique, and their team was called The Cutters.

The best part of all is watching Davis Phinney being such a whiner.
I guffaw with great gasping snorts every time he tries to rub his face off with a towel after the Badger smoked him at the sprint. Though it's discouraging to hear the commentator calling Hinault's victory 'Controversial' or 'dirty.' We Americans really were a bunch of greenhorns back then.
Then an interviewer asks Hinault in a very accusatory tone, "Why didn't you help in the breakaway?" And bless Hinault, he dismissed him with "Because I'm not stupid." :)

My childhood villain has become my mightiest hero.

I am fully aware of that fact. ;)

Kinda like in Star Wars when Frodo gave the ring to Indiana Jones.

...burn me a copy and send it to me so I can watch too....too cheap to buy it, I mean, come on already...

I watched the Zinger and the Coors when I lived in Colorado and I've seen the ToC in CA. The scenery in CA can not begin to compete with the mountains in Colorado. Watching the pack go by atop Loveland Pass at 12,000 feet was wonderful. Seeing our local boy Levi pass through Santa Rosa was good too.
