Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Would you care to know what steep is?

Clicky.

Check out 1:57 and 3:10

Arguably the steepest road on earth that isn't sprint length. 17.6% average grade for 4.7 miles. 26% grade for almost an entire kilometer...

Holy crap. That's what triple chainrings are for, right there (on a road bike).

The guy's technical skills suck on the MTB though. That's not a steep "trail" or anything.

That part at 2:06 honestly looks like it hits 100% grade.

I'd like to take my Taurine on that hill. I'd be running a 29x32...

Lord have mercy. Not me.

Funny how we become accustomed to pro riders. This guy comes across on the TV screen as downright fat. But I'm only comparing him to other riders I see on TV: Pro road cyclists. I've just become so used to seeing these tiny climbers on TV, start to think it's normal. Makes this guy look huge.

I am a climber and that just wets my whistle...

I would love to tackle that with my 26 x 34 climbing bike...

My wife has always wanted to got to Italy...

Hmmmmm...

Up doesn't scare me...

Down is another issue....

The decent must be hell....

How many stops to prevent your tire from blowing off the rim...

Yeah, it makes Jester look like a nice little climb huh?

Still, it's far short of 100%. This is a square image, the red line is 100%. His front hub needs to come up about 18 inches!

Come to the Bay Area, and Ill take ya up something steeper. Just under 19% and it is over a mile. It can be done on a standard double too. If ya really want to do more the road continues on after a brief tenth of a mile break. https://actc.org/profiles/index.php

The continuation is not on there. Yes down is much scarier on this road.

What the heck, I totally missed the 26%. lol

I wouldn't attempt it unless I had disc brakes. Hopefully, the road continues from the top and going back down isn't the only option.

26% grade? Steep? Pfui. Piece of cake (possibly regurgitated)

Of course, there's always Rosedale Chimney (a country road) used in the Tour of Britain one year. European pros got off and slipslided up in their cleats - max gradient about 33%

Ride/rode slide/slode?

As I've said, non sprint distance. Possibly regurgitated? I took those numbers off of the elevation profile.

Ok everyone, pay attention... this road is 4.7 miles long. You're talking about elevation seriously impacting breathing at the top if you're not acclimated.

The top section is 0.85 miles, and comes out to 18.1% in my grades spreadsheet. Doesn't compare to OP climb at all. Steep, yes, but a sprint climb.

You or I could do Baldwin like cake. All it takes is averaging 900 watts for 30-ish seconds for a guy my weight.

It's a shame this road doesn't tie in with Quimby due north since that's close to the point where it ups the ante in grade.

26% for a kilometer is crazy. I would love to try it though.

We're talking an hour at threshold (or worse) for most of us. It hurts just watching. Is that buttercream cake?

I'd like to see KillerPenguin's unicycle guy try it. He would need shoulder straps connected to it just to keep his ass on the seat.

I would want some tires coated with 5.10's Stealth rubber compound - and a pillow on my butt.
