Odd wheelbuilding Q:
I have an older road bike with D/A (7401) 7sp hubs 36h. I want to re-build the hubs with modern bits for regular road use. Nothing funky, no time period bits, just a modern, light, reliable build for my 220# self.
I'm thinking DT 1.1 rims (perhaps 1.2) as I like the aesthetic and since I'm running modern rims w/ 36 spokes I might be able to use some of the ultralight spokes to cut weight.
So, any suggestions?

DT 1.1 or Velocity Aeroheads
Sapim CX-Ray
The 1.2s are kind of heavy but are probably indestructible, if that is an issue. Aesthetically the older hubs might look a little better on a lower profile rim.

Yeah, I don't think you can go wrong with an Aerohead, 1.1, Fusion, CXP-33, Deep-V, depending on how reliable you want it.
For a really durable wheel (2+ years), 220lbs, I'd at least get as deep of a rim as a Fusion or CXP-33.

I built a wheelset with DT 1.1, single eyelet rims, DT 240s hubs, DT alloy nipples, and Revolution spokes. They are my favorite wheels but my recommendation is to use Competition spokes on the driveside rear because the Revolutions stretch too much under high tension. At your weight I would go with 36 spoke wheels.

You really want to spend this much on a 7 speed hub? DT and velocity rims are around $70-90 a piece and the spokes mentioned here are around $1 each.

Not a fan of the Mavic options (perfectly serviceable, I know).
As to cost, well the bike is superb, and other than some other common maintenance items, the wheelbuild is what puts it back in service. So, $300 isn't a deal breaker.
Al, thanks for the tip on going with 36 hole bits.
