Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My New Ride...

All the pieces are waiting to be built up at the shop right now...so a little prequel before I post any pics. So try to picture it if you can. I'm 6'2", 185 lbs. And my boys at Cynergy Cycles in Santa Monica, CA hooked me up with this stealthy beauty!

2008 Specialized S-Works SL2 (raw/white) (58).

Campagnolo Chorus throughout, Record Skeleton Brakes.

Specialized carbon stem (unpolished) (120) - temporary until the FSA OS-115 White is released.

FSA Carbon K-Wing Pro (44) - requested FSA Alloy, but they gave me a hard time about being too "pro."

Fulcrum Race 3 Wheelset (black).

Specialized Phenom Saddle (black) (143).

Specialized S-Works Pave SL Seat Post.

Speedplay Zero ChroMo Pedals (black).

Specialized Rib Cage Pro (matte black-to match the frame).

Specialized Armadillo Tyres (went for over 5,000mi on my last pair!).

White Campy Hudz.

Will run three black cables and one white, just my lame ass style, but it's what I do.

Will probably stick with Black Stella Tape for now, maybe White in the summer?

Whaddiya think?

I think you're in high cotton. That's what I think - as well as I want one too.

Very nice - I like it!

I'm just wondering though, are you sure you want Armadillos on an S-Works SL2 (obviously I dont know the environment you cycle in - but just wondering) ?

I was able to get this frame at a steal as I work in a shop. So the frame may be a little to high quality in comparison to the Chorus groupset and Fulcrum Race 3s as opposed to 1s or Zeros...but I am still on quite a budget. I love the Chorus gruppo and would put it on just about any ride I'd own, and I've experienced the Race 1s and 3s on both a Ridley Damocles and Time VXR Ulteam and there was no discernible difference other than aesthetics. To tell you the truth, I actually like the standard gauge spokes of the Race 3s better. Call me crazy.

The Armadillos are simply chosen as trainer tyres...my coworker and former Belgian Pro Racer recommended them for their durability. Of course, come race season, I will swap them out for something a little lighter and quicker. I live in LA and other than my weekend riding (typically pristine pavement) my mon-fri solo rides aren't on the nicest of pavement.

I'm building this weekend, needed to collect my paycheck from a freelance illustration job before I could throw down for the SL2...trust me, pics will be in ASAP

Thanks for the comments guys...best of riding to you!

So tell me if I should be royally pissed...

I go into work on Saturday, ask if I can build up the SL2 if it's slow or maybe after hours, right?

They say to me, "We sold it. But don't worry, we can get you another, it'll take until the end of April and we probably won't be able to get it to you in the Raw/White colour you liked."

So hear I sit, broken-hearted, had to ride, but my ride departed. Sold to another, for a quick dollar, now all I want to do is hollar....at my LBS/Fellow-Coworkers!

Damnit. If it's any consolation, the guy who bought it out from under me felt bad and wants to lend me his old S-Works Tarmac (Dura Ace equipped) until I figure out what I want to do next.

What do you guys suggest? Our team typically rides Spesh as we are a Spesh Concept Store...I'm thinking either the 08 Spesh Pro or maybe a Ridley Damocles or Excalibur? Or even a Time...just thinking...what do you fellas suggest?

Thanks again. I'm going to go cry now.

Having your bike sold out from under you is really uncool.

Nothing against Specialized, they make some pretty hot bikes, but the real question is, if Ridley or Time were options then why the hell were you getting a Tarmac? I'd have gone for one of those well before the Specialized unless it was an unbelievable deal, or your budget is tight.

It's the Tarmac SL2...it's really an unbelievable bike...one of the best i've ever had the chance to ride. Comfy, super light in a size 58...and stiff in all the right places. It wasn't your typical run of the mill Tarmac (not that there's anything wrong with that). It was also in a limited edition Raw/White...and the team bike for the team I ride on...now I am only a Cat5 Racer, they sold it to a Pro1/2 who is really a fantastic guy and fantastic cyclist! But all the same, I had my heart set on the bike since July...and here I am asking for suggestions

For what it is worth. I have been riding for a loooong time. For the past 2 seasons I have been on a plain jane 2006 S-Works Tarmac. It is the first bike I have ever owned that made me not want a new bike every year. I am so satisfied with this bike that when my wife suggested I look at a new bike for this year I said no. There is nothing on the market I would rather have.

Oh man... that sucks the big one. I too would be pissed to the nth degree.

Sounds like you had your heart set on that SL. Try and find another one elsewhere, even if you have to save up a bit more for it... unless something else grabs your fancy. Don't make any rash decisions.
