Aluminum rim brake surface noise?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Aluminum rim brake surface noise?

I bought a set of Mavic Aksiums back in November (pretty sure they're the 2007 model), and noticed immediately that they were making a strange sort of thumb noise while braking. I checked it out on my trainer, and realized the noise was coming from the brake pads hitting the vertical seam in the braking surface of the rim - it happens on both front and rear wheels, though it's more noticeable/louder from the front.

I took them into my LBS, and was told that it wasn't anything to worry about, the seams probably just expand a bit in the cold weather. Sounded good to me. Now I'm starting to get worried about it, as several people on group rides have pointed the noise out to me, and had never heard of the phenomena when I gave them the LBS' explanation.

Has anyone ever experienced this? I'm going to call Mavic on Monday and see what they have to say, but in the meantime I'm curious what others think..

Happens some times on my Mavic Open Pro Rim's. I just use a scotch brite pad to clean the rim a little. Put it between your brake and the rim then spin the wheel. Helps mine out.

When it happens to you, is it due to dirt/crud though? These rims were perfectly new/clean when I noticed it, and it definitely occurs at the seams...unless you mean I should try to rub the seam down?
