A poor man's TT overshoes.

Looking at some prices for TT overshoes, I am amazed at how much they sell for since they are essentially a shaped piece of spandex. This got me thinking that I can achieve the same effect if I wrap my shoes with some Saran wrap from the grocery store. A box of 3000 metres should last me for a few lifetimes.

A side benefit is that the Saran wrap will still show off my blingy shoes when they are on. If I crash, I can replace these overshoes for $0.02. My overshoes would always look like new. I also think it would be more aerodynamic to use the Saran wrap since I can wrap my feet as tightly as I want to and I can pad the shoes with extra bits of the wrap to form a smoother shape.

If it rains, my feet will stay dry. A lot of those overshoes are not water repellent and that can get annoying as hell in a down pour. You will save money by not have to buy another set of water proof overshoes. On a training ride, just carry a ball of the Saran wrap in your back pocket and apply it when the rain starts coming down.

Any problems with this plan?

Why stop at the shoes?

Not if you like vinegar feet.

januarytwenty 01-13-08 09:39 PM

Just don't forget holes for the cleats :D

There may be a problem with looking like a ****... but otherwise its a great idea.

elgalad 01-13-08 09:46 PM

Jeez, how cheap are you

You can pick up a set of sidi overshoes for about $25 on PBK.

Get to it.

This can be fixed by substituting aluminum foil in place of the Saran wrap. By placing the shiny side outwards, you can blind people as you ride by and they won't be able to make out what you have on your feet.

How about - time is money?

For the amount of time it would take you to wrap and unwrap your shoes every time, including sorting out holes for cleats an some ventilation, on top of time spent purchasing Saran wrap and explaining to everyone why you've mummified your feet, you could have done several hours of work and earned more than enough to pay for a pair of normal overshoes.

Saran wrap covered with liquid latex...solid!

brianappleby 01-13-08 10:04 PM

Well, I would still have to put on and take off regular TT overshoes anyways so that is no time waster.

In a TT, you wouldn't need holes for ventilation since the ride is so short.

I could go to MegaLoMart once and buy a 100 km roll of Saran wrap and that would last me for untold ages. It would save time compared to buying the regular overshoes since I always have replacements and I don't have to buy new ones when they tear.

Other riders may laugh at first, until you beat them on $500 of bikes and clothing. You would also gain respect from the other racers by handing out Saran wrap overshoes at the race warm up. Did that Cat. 1 sell his overshoes to get enough gas to come to the race? Why, you can give him enough from your stash to cover 10 feet!!!

I don't have a job.

Not suprised.
No job = no money and too much free time.

along that logic, why clothes at all? just put a napkin on your crotch and saran wrap yourself up. Don't need a helmet either, just packing peanuts and some saran wrap should be the 'smart shoppers' choice

I would consider turning up to one of the local group rides in that get up just for the hell of it :D

equipment doesn't win races. Enjoy your saran wrapped feet. Too bad you can't smell over the internet

3000 metres should last your whole neighborhood a few lifetimes. You'll only be able to pull off this "look" if you use lots of duct-tape.

BHBiker 01-14-08 03:39 AM

thats a great idea! show us some pics and let us know how you go...:-)

damocles1 01-14-08 06:58 AM

Go to Ebay and search 'Spa Sport'

$20 shipped for lycra overshoes...

irish pat 01-14-08 07:19 AM

Probike kit $15 for shoecovers.
I like the idea though. If I were in a pinch, I would do it.

In a time trial, equipment matters.

Treefox 01-14-08 08:21 AM

Didn't Graeme Obree do this? Or some other suitably nuts Brit?

Wha??

That's like saying you don't need a nice saddle because cycling rides are short. Have fun at your next 200k TT.
