Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I need new wheels

Hi, I am an avid cyclist from Boston and am looking for some advice on some new wheels.

I own a Caad8 with ultegra and some mavic equipe wheels. I would really like to upgrade to a set of lighter wheels, I really like the look of american classics.

I found these on ebay, what do you think?

https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...ksid=p3907.m29

They come with a dura-ace cassette so that would be a good race cassette. what do you think they are worth, I found that MSRP on just the wheels with the ceramic bearings is $700.

Are ceramic bearings worth it? Will they make me faster on the hills.

I don't think ceramic bearings are worth it. You're most likely losing the manufacturer's warranty by buying used. A new Dura Ace cassette is about $140 plus $450 that the American Classic 350w can be had for new. Thats $110 you're saving by buying brand new wheels with bearings that worked for a long time when we didn't know ceramic bearing existed.

Ceramics should probably be your last upgrade.

Those wheels on Ebay are Brand new, never had tires mounted. And the Ceramic bearings are factory installed as it says.

Where did you find those wheels for $450?

Go with custom built wheels, they are light and you have choices and they usually cost less than pre-built wheels.

gvhbikes.com has a sale on American Classic's right now. Again, warranty, think about it.

though I'm pretty sure you are advertising after your last response.

P.S. the cheapest custom built sub 1350 gram wheels are about $620 including shipping according to those that I've contacted. Not a terrible price, and probably worth the ability to tune to rider needs, but still, cost more than American Classics.

Oh and Dura Ace cassettes can be had for $115 fom pro bike kit.

haha, the day he posts and people say stuff about warranty and the bearings, the "seller" added that they were professionally installed at the factory.
