Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Helmet Integrity

I leave my helmet in the garage next to my bike and thought occurred to me, do the extremes of the winter cold and summer heat affect the integrity of the helmet were I to take a spill?

I don't know about cold but you should definitely not leave it in a hot car or garage during the summer since it will contribute to the breakdown of the styrofoam. Manufacturers recommend replacing a helmet every 3-5 years.

I left a helmet in the garage in Texas the past two years, and the extremes of the weather (probably from 30 degrees to 120 degrees in the garage) ruined the helmet. The styrofoam became hard and brittle and the pads looked twenty years old.

About one afternoon in the trunk of a car in August in Texas would have the same effect.

Situations like this are why helmet manufacturers recommend replacing helmets after 3 years. People who live in California where the indoor temperature is never below 50F or above 90F can probably get much better life out of their helmets. The manufacturers' guidelines have a big safety margin built in.

Frankly, no. I was curious nonetheless. Mine is around 18 months old and I plan to replace around the correct time. That said, I am going to bring it in the house now.
