thinking of switching to campy...
 
I have tried my buddys bike with campy veloce and was amazed at the shifting convinience and "clarity" vs ultegra-da mix on my bike. I really like the index-n-thumb paradigm and the brifters have a different feel to them. It also seems that people in the know prefer campy to shimano.

At the moment I have one bike that I am going to upgrade to 10sp and I am almost certain it's gonna be campy. What does the infinite bf wisdom say - yay or nay? How good is the quality of shifing on conversion casettes (I am keeping my old wheelsets)? How much is this gonna run me?

Not sure about the conversion cassttes, but once you go Campy, you'll never go back. :)

You could just replace your freehub on your wheels. I know a Krysirum FreeHub is like $45. Other than that I here the American classic conversion cassettes are good.

ahh... The age old question.

It will cost signifigantly more to change from campy to shimano or vice versa than just upgrading the group. If I was going that far, I would probably just consider a new bike.

Go to any bike race in the US, and compare how many people are running Campy to Shimano.

My new Dura Ace should be arriving soon.

I finally got fed up with the constantly having to replace parts that shouldn't be breaking in the first place. Warranty was way too much of a hassle so I always bit the bullet and repaired the stuff at my own expense. I consider myself pretty good at fixing Record shifters.

All of my buds ride Shimano and rarely do they have a problem with anything.

I've always been jealous of how nice the Shimano stuff shifts compared to Campy. And yes I do know how to correctly set up my drive train.....

How much is this gonna run me?

The 2008 Veloce shifters, FD, RD and chain come to 207.50 at PBK. You can keep your current brakes and cranks, despite the shimagnoloness. Not sure how much the conversion cassettes are, but a shiftmate will also work.

As far as everything else, I like how campy hoods feel and look and that they're rebuild-able. Also, I have 2000 miles on my veloce chain with ~1/32" of wear over 12", so around 50% until I replace. BTW, PBK's 30 dollar veloce chains are absurdly cheap.

God help you my son. The Dark One's pull is strong, but the Sisters of Dura Achee are lighting candles for you should you return to the Light. By the way the most telling clue in the OP is 'Ultegra/DA' mix. That's like some pathetic bastrd mutt at the Westminster Kennel Club. It's almost more than I can bear. Get some DA Purity before you go over to (cringe) Campy.

Sweet Mother of Merckx this is more upsetting than Fed Chairman Bernanke fiddling while American Equities burn.

Erm...it's been a while since I darkened the door of a world religions class, but I'd rather suspect that the Italians would be the Catholic ones, and the Japanese would tend to be Buddhist. I think your application of the ecclesiastical here is a bit confused.

I have tried to love Campy. Really. I always ran Campy in the late '70's-early '80's....

I put Record 10 on my Madone 2 years ago. Rode it for four months. I found the shifting to be clunky and imprecise although I liked the brake feel and clean cockpit. tried different chains, cables, lubes, etc....still the same. Then I rode one of my employee's Gunnars with Ultegra 10. I thought "good grief, why am I fighting it!" Shifting was easy and dead on and felt more solid and direct. Rocking D/A these days.:)

I started riding D/A in 1989. It always worked impeccably. In nearly 19 years, the only D/A parts that have broken (and this is over 100,000+ road bike miles) have been three brifters (two rear, one front) and a rear derailleur (I rode it so many miles the friggin spring gave out). That's IT. Otherwise, impeccable function, appearance, performance, etc.

There are the weenies who weigh crap, wring hands, hang out @ the bike shop and pose at the Starbucks. Then there are the idiots like me who ride, ride, ride, get hammered, race a bit, get hammered worse, and ride some more. In the rain, the snow, the dark, the fog, etc. If you are the latter, get D.A. Then shut up and ride your bike. And of course come here and start a thread trashing the Freds.

Because Suntour drivetrains such as the suntour superbe/superbe pro are really good drivetrains that were run on C&V bikes. It's the C&V forum dealing with C&V bikes so I think it's a pretty valid statement.

What do 25 year old components have to do with this discussion outside of one of you predictably busting my balls for riding that stuff at one time?

P.S. Suntour Superbe stuff was superb. Are you starting to see a pattern here? Three little words: Made in Japan. And the most astonishing aspect of that is that when I was a kid in the 60's, that was associated with low quality. Things change. Now made in Taiwan is starting to lose its negative connotations. Maybe that's because half of the highest quality brand names in the world outsource their manufacturing there.

Buy a Centaur group, get it set up by someone who actually knows how to work on Campagnolo.

Those who say Campagnolo shifting is clunky like to softer action of Shimano. This is just a personal preference.

The pros tend to prefer the very clear, positive shifting of Campagnolo (hence the new ltd ed group with STRONGER springs to further accentuate this "clunky" feeling).

Jumping on a new Campagnolo group, riding around the parking lot is not a test of anything. Campagnolo starts out stiff and smooths out after a few thousand kms. This is deliberate. If you really want to feel Campagnolo, get on someone's year old stuff and ride it for a few hours. That will be a little more realistic.

In the end, give it a go. They will both work fine. You can decide for yourself which you prefer.

Actually, after aligning all costs in a spreadsheet I am apparently staying with shimano. Conversion casettes are going to kill any cost advantage.

However, to counter the nay-sayers, I did a simple count of dura-ace vs shimano on "bikes of the pros" on cycling news tech page.

Yes, I'm totally anal about my set-up. I've ridden Campy for years.

I would add that I do think the way shifting feels is a personal preference.

I think Campy is clunky. Others think it is smooth.

My opinion is all 3 of my Record equipped bike shifters feel a bit different. Other Campy bikes I've ridden have all felt different and none have ever felt as smooth as any D.A. bike I've been on. D.A. always feels consistent no matter who's bike I've ridden.

Maybe all that PBK Campy stuff I've bought is just junk after all. The prices are soooo cheap!

I acually liked that clunky feel, it accentuates every shift. I also liked the fact that you could dump the whole casette at once.

As I said, however, it's too much hassle to switch given that I already have a bunch of shimano wheelsets.

Aside from dumping the cassette that I like, I just prefer the feel of Shimano brifters in my hands. Sure, Italian seems cooler than Japanese but at the end of the day its how it all works that matters. To anyone thinking of switching should ride a bike with Campy first, then decide. Just my 2 cents,
