Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

eMotion and Kreitler owners

My exposure to rollers is quite limited. I have tried sets of both the cheaper Performance and Minoura sets based on recommendations. They seemed like decent quality and rode well. Nowhere as loud as my trainer in the immediate area, but since my workout room is on the second floor of the house they seemed to resonate through the floor pretty loudly and noise increases with speed.

The rollers kept things very interesting during a workout and I'm getting quite tired of the trainer. I'd like to find a set of rollers I can use without disturbing the family. Is the noise simply a matter of cheaper bearings in these models?

I tried out a set of eMotion rollers this past weekend at a friend's house and man those things are quality!! They seemed quiet but I couldn't tell much since we were on concrete.

What about Kreitlers?

I bought my all aluminum Kreitlers in 1981. Aside from two belts which were both replaced under warranty, I have had zero problems. They were $400 then. I ride them nearly every day in the Winter. How many sets of cheap rollers would I have consigned to the landfill by now? Dunno..., but I'm all for buying it once. Saves time and money in the long run....

Kreitler FTW.

I took delivery of a set of E-motion rollers a couple of weeks ago. They are absolutely amazing. My hat's off to those that build their own, but as far as the E-Motion rollers built by Inside Ride are concerned, they are of top-notch quality. I've got absolutely no complaints.

The only issue with e-motion rollers is that it took about 6 weeks for mine to arrive!

They have been a nice change from the fixed wheel trainer.

Trying putting an extra carpet remnant or rubber pad underneath your rollers.

The issue is not noise but vibration through the floor with rollers.

Exactly. I guess I wasn't clear about that in my original post.

I do use a mat under the trainer and rollers but it doesn't seem to help much.

My question was whether the higher end rollers, with presumably better quality parts, made less noise and vibration through the floor.

Kreitler FTW.

The MountainView welding department will gladly take my aluminum performance rollers and turn them into god knows what when I'm done with them in 10-20 years. Why must you throw everything in the landfill when your done with it? Recycle bin FTW!!!

My circa 1980 Al Krietler's are on a piece of plywood on top of the carpeting. Real quiet. The plywood and carpetting isolate any vibration from the floor. I put the plywood down because I noticed the roller feet sank into the carpeting enough where the o ring belt smudged the carpeting.
