I agree w/ Northern California and Tahoe. Also consider Monterrey - Big Sur area, very resort-y and expensive, but the Big Sur Coast is spectacular. In fact, if you have 2 weeks and don't mind being mobile during the vacation, I would fly into San Francisco and see some combination of :
- Monterey/Big Sur - spectacular sea coast
- Calistoga - great little roads, wine tasting, hot springs/spas, relaxing and spendy at the same time
- Yosemite -not really great for riding but... just wow. Ride Tioga Road (hwy 120) from Crane Flat to Tioga Pass or down to Lee Vining & have your wife pick you up. Try not to run over your lower jaw. The drive to Mamoth and go hiking up at Rock Creek.
- Tahoe - nice riding (look up the "death ride" for suggested passes to ride), spectacular scenery, lake-beaches, plenty of relaxing (after labor day)

All of this is in a 4 hour drive radius of San Francisco.

There is nice riding in Colorado, too, you could base-camp at Breckenridge/Dillon/Silverthorn and ride 3-4 nearly 11,000 foot passes from your hotel. August is great, by mid-september it starts getting cold.

Er... ok, that's all i got.

This is turnin out to be one big cornucopia of suggestions/destinations. How to choose?
It'll be fun workin out the logistics on these options.

Traverse City is actually a fantastic place to ride a bike if you don't mind not being near a race scene.

California. Either Northern, or Southern. Some of the best rides in the country. The most geographically/environmentally diverse state in the Union. Great weather, for the most part, all around and nearly year 'round.

And compared to the other states? When you're not riding there is still plenty to do with your wife/family out and about.
