Do tubulars ever "unstretch"?
Do I have to keep stretching them? Can you stretch them too much?
Last night I looped a bucket handle thru two Conti Sprinters, then hooked the tires over the 'broomstick' clothes hanger bar in my closet. I filled the tub with about 3/4 gallon of water and let that stretch them overnight. When I take the tires down will they stay stretched? Will I need to stretch them again if I don't use them for another couple of months?

The best way I know to stretch them is to mount them on rims and inflate them to pressure for a week. My spares easily go on a rim and they are well over 6-months-old. I don't think shinkage is a problem unless you just came out of the pool.

Conti's are notoriously tight though. I've had plenty of old pre-stretched ones that were more difficult than wrestling a bear to get on a rim...plus I don't have any spare rims.

Ride it like you stole it
Not even a clincher rim. You do not need a tubular rim to stretch tubular tires any 700c rim will do.

I got some spare rims that were trashed free from my LBS. They work well as stretchers.

If I don't stretch Conti's I get glue all over the sidewalls.
