Wow CDR, I had no idea. First I tried Clif bars, but gave up on them because they make me constipated. I couldn't sh** for a week! Now I learn I have to give up on Powerbars because they do the opposite. Gels are just nasty.
I think I will just go back to being old skool... bananas and fig newtons, swilled down with some orange Accelerade. Mmmmmmm.

I know they probably aren't that good for - long term energy and all. But I eat these like they ain't gonna be around tomorrow. I absolutely love them. They are soft and sweet. I pack my jersey with them on my long rides. Plus, on real cold days, they don't tend to HTFU like a rock. Like say Clif bars or the like.

from Editor's Choice: The World's Best Street Food
Mystery Fig Bars, New York, NY
The world might be without Seinfeld were it not for my favorite street food -- whole wheat fig bars, wrapped in plastic without even a peel-off label, from Korean grocers in New York City.
As the story goes, Larry David and his pal Jerry were snack-shopping late one night, poking fun at the merchandise by the register -- namely the fig bars "that look like they were made in someone's basement," said David. There in the grocer, he said to Seinfeld, "We should do a show about this. This is the kind of dialogue that we should do on the show." Soon after, NBC signed the sitcom "about nothing."
I got hooked on the mystery fig treats when I was young and broke in New York, and they were a buck for four. Twenty years later, they're a buck for three and filling enough to remain my ideal breakfast-on-the-go. They're gummy and sweet on the inside, like the Pop-Tarts I was never allowed to eat as a kid -- but with much more fiber and less white sugar, posing no threat of a midmorning nosedive. They're best when moist and fresh, washed down with a carton of ice-cold whole milk.
Where they're from, however, remains a Seinfeld joke. They all but completely elude Google searches (try it, and the closest match you'll find is Larry David's New Yorker interview, which informed this story). A few Korean market buyers told me they're imported, but they didn't know from where, nor could I track down the wholesalers for questioning.
One thing I do know is where they sleep at night -- germ-free under Saran (no small reassurance when you're talking about street food in New York). -- Maureen Clarke

Can you send me some ?? I used to get WW fig bars in the buld section of the supermarket years ago, but I haven't been able to find them since. They were great. Much more substantial than the Nabisco ones.

I prefer either Fig bars (I like the mini-packs for an easy grab and go) or Payday candybars. I usually have one of the two I mentioned, and a banana, on every long ride.

Although I like gel/liquids, I feel the need to eat when doing rides over 4 or 5 hours. So I recently bought some bars. For some reason I like Balance bars, maybe because it forces me to drink a bottle of water (those bars are so dry). So I bought two.

i didn't notice power bars acting as a laxative thats interesting, maybe its because i typically eat banana before a ride and that works as an opposite.

Kashi "Chewy" bars are excellent, not chalky like many bars. The malted milk ball flavor is a favorite

Cliffbars +/ banana for the ride, Ovaltine (or equivalent) + banana after the ride.
If Gels needed - as suggested earlier - brown rice syrup (organic) in a gel-flask.

FWIW, there are several places on line selling whole wheat fig bars (and Apricot, Raspberry ...). I'm going to order a few to see which I like best. They might be too heavy for riding, but they'd be great right after a ride.

I have not shopped at the above links, just found them by searching "Whole Wheat Fig bars" ... among others.
This should probably be in the nutrition forum.

Try Lara Bars, they're not crunchy at all and are fairly soft, the ingredients of the Cherry Pie version (the one I have handy) is dates, almonds, and cherries - nothing else. 190 calories and a decent smattering of vitamins and minerals. Here's a review
