I still want to talk about vegan saddles

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ok, I'll start with I've never even thought about this sort of thing before that topic came up. I mean not even considered it.

How do you feel about saddles made from materials derived from animals that lived millions of years ago?

Okay, let's stop talking about whether anyone personally feels about animal products or what not. If you want to fight about someone's personal choices in life (vegetarian, vegan, religion, whatever) - you can fight it out in the P&R forum.

For those who legitimately seek out "vegan" saddles - there are plenty of options out there. Look for most "synthetic" covered saddles or the higher-end CF saddles.

For one, the Specialized Toupe is a "vegan" saddle. Non-leather, comfortable, light, and fitted (you have to get yourself sized first though).

How do vegans feel about the leather the welders wear to protect themselves as they weld their frames?

the same way you feel about paying taxes to blow up people in other countries, perhaps?

i think people like to bash vegans, because seeing someone try so hard to do the Right Thing makes them feel stupid, because they know they aren't trying (to be green) at all.

(for the record, i ain't vegan, but used to be)

We have a forum for this you know, why don't you muster up the nuts to make your way over there where you can act like a tough guy without breaking the rules, you know, step up to the plate...take one for the team. At any rate your analogy is flawed. If i don't pay taxes i go to jail.

You're misunderstanding my point. Veganism is a lot like communism. You know, it's great and all if that's what you're into, problem is that it's simply not possible.

Also, what the hell does being a vegan have to do with being green?

PS
A vegan from Seattle. Hmm...that is kind of like seeing a 23 year old in a north face jacket sipping on a starbucks. Tell me, how cool is it to be a non-conforming conformist?

"You'd be non conforming too if you were just as non conforming as me"

now that's a serious matter of opinion...the "Right Thing" may differ depending on who you talk to.

for the record...I like my non-leather Toupe just fine....but then again, I really like a good rib-eye.

Nah, i think it's inherently good. I mean, if i could enjoy a good rib-eye without actually killing a Cow, i'd be all for that because i don't really think killing this is a good thing. The opinion is whether or not it's a big enough deal to care

By the way, why not just start a thread "I want a saddle that has no leather on it"...might avoid some of the natural debate that "vegan" is going to create.

I eat meat. I also try to not wear leather. I guess I'm just a mystery wrapped in an enigma. Or just an ass.

I find it ironic how there is this elitist sense of outside the box thinking on the part of vegans, yet they don't really think about what they are doing to the fullest extent.
