Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anyone else have a Bontrager freehub fail?

The interface between the rear axle and the cartridge bearing developed enough play to result in a rim which had 2-3mm of lateral runout.
The symtoms while riding was a cluncky noise which occured when I stop pedaling. The freewheel did not want to allow freewheeling.
The bike is only 5 months old and has approx 1000 miles on it. I don't jump curbs.
My LBS contacted Trek who is sending me an entire new rear wheel which will have an 08 Bontrager hub. It's a Race X Lite and my LBS says the hub is made by DT Swisse.

In over 30 years of riding this is the first time I have had a hub failure (not just the cups or cones wearing out.)

Anyone else have this happen?

PS The warranty on the wheels is 5 years by Trek.

Me too. Trek replaced it under warrenty. The mechanic told me that some grit had gotten into the freewheel mechanism and had messed things up. To be fair, I rode all through the winter with those wheels and they were exposed to some pretty harsh conditions.

Should we be worried about the reliabity of these hubs?

I saw a Race Lite XXX carbon/tubular wheelset at the Westminster MD swap meet for $870 (used) and they looked very nice but the hubs appeared to be the same but I did not scrutinize them carefully.
