Shimano 105 9 speed cranks with 10 speed?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano 105 9 speed cranks with 10 speed?

Anyone know about this?

Nashbar has some 105 doubles on sale and my buddy is looking to go from triple truvative octalinks to a double and these fit the bill.

Only thing is that he's running a 10 speed rear and the cranks according to nashbar are "only 9 speed" I know the chains are different but is it going to matter really with the cranks? I thought it was just the narrowness for the rear cassette?

Also, the Truvative GXP integrated BB is octalink so there should be no worries about going from a triple to a double octalink crankset correct?

Thanks squad
~DC

I ran a 9 speed ultrega crank with a 105 10 speed group, and it worked fine. As to the BB, i think the size for a shimano double is 109.5mm

But with the BB the only real issue is going to be in how far out the crankset is from the frame correct? I mean... technically you could run a "triple bb" with a double crank, its just going to keep the rings out farther.

He'll also be using a triple front derailler so I think he'll have enough limiting to play with to get it to work appropriately.

Lemme know,

You can run any crank with just about any system. The issue is whether you'll have enough rear derailleur cage to take up the chain slack with a wide range front. Chain width isn't critical on the front, only the rear.

exactly what I was thinking which is why I found it odd that shimano listed this as a 9 speed crankset.

Yes, 9 works with 10 on the front.

i believe truvativ BBs are isis except for powerspline which only work on certain truvativ
cranks such as touro. octalink is shimano and only works with shimano cranks if i'm not
mistaken,

i have read (here) that the gap on a 9 is wide enough for a 10-speed chain to potentially get stuck in...

Even if this is the only issue with using the "wrong" size spindle, you may have real issues with shifting, since the chainline won't match up correctly.

I'm also with the guy's post above - did Truvativ make cranks with Octalink? I thought they used ISIS and square taper only.
