Shoe Recommendation
Yes I did a search and the most recent thread was back in November of '07.
So I am posting. My current shoes are pretty much dead and I need new ones.
I found these two on performance:
https://www.performancebike.com/shop/....cfm?SKU=24871
https://www.performancebike.com/shop/....cfm?SKU=23747
Any reviews? Are they both good choices? Should I keep looking?

you really should be trying them on before you buy them. I span about 3 or 4 sizes depending on which brand of shoe i buy.

I know performance has a great return policy, you can exchange for the proper size if the fit is off

Both Adidas and Diadora have some durability issues. My suggestion is to save up for some Sidi's. Mine are 5 years old and are still going strong. I just replaced the heel tabs twice and the ratchet once.

Unfortunately my financial advisor (wife) does not see spending $230 on new shoes. So my chances are better to go cheaper. Or to deduct new shoes from what I can spend when I get a new bike in June-July

I was thinking the ratchet may be nice. Which was why I was looking at shoes like my original links.

Shoes are one thing I buy from the local shop. Nothing beats actually trying them on, and comparing brands & sizes. Seems like shipping shoes back & forth until you get the right one is more trouble than it's worth.

I've got a pair of the Adistar Ultra, their excellent shoes, at the time they were Adidas's most specified shoe, the current design is the same except in a different color and maybe slightly lighter. At that price they are a real bargain. The sizing from my experience runs half a size bigger than my shimano's. The flat super stiff carbon sole is excellent and very thin, which allows you to get closer to the pedal for a lower stack height. The upper is very light but is not as supportive as some shoes I've worn. The ratchet works well and its easier to adjust the main strap when your on the go, just reach down and lift it make it close or press the button to release. The adidas strap design put less pressure on the upper foot than normal wide straps, so you don't feel them no matter how hard you pull them up. the hard heel cup stops heel lift. The upper is extremely well ventilated actually too cold at times. I think the straight last suits a narrower longer foot, maybe that why I found the sizing a bit different. The Diadora in comparison has a curve last and the Shimano has a semi curved last.
Specification wise the Diadora Proracer Carbon is more of a direct comparsion to the Ultra.

My foot is wider than the norm. So I may go for the diadora. Thanks.

The diadora's are probably narrower than the adistar ultra's, I'd look at Shimano and Northwave for the wider foot. The Northwave have a higher toe box. I have a wider foot with shorter toes and I really like the Shimano fit, most of new models SH-R300, SH-R220 and SH-R160G have thermo mouldable uppers and inserts for improved fit, although they fit really well out of the box. SHR-R215B is highly specified as well but not thermo mouldable., its was the top of the range a few year back. For really wide feet they also have the "E" extra width models, Sidi also have the "mega" sizing.

I scored a pair of '07 Adidas Vueltano Roadies, new, from a bike shop on ebay. I've had good luck with Adi's. Sure, they're a little gay in silver/blue, but for $60, I'm good.

Specialized. I tried Adidas and the insoles seem like they were taken from a pair of checkered Vans. I tried Sidi's 5.5 model and they didn't fit right and cost a fortune. I got the Specialized S-Works and got way more stiffness than the Sidi for $100 less, and a better enclosure system.
However, you may not be able to afford the S-Works, but the lower-end (but still high-end without the Sidi pricetag) shoes were still awesome.
I've got a pair of the Specialized BG Pro MTB shoes that are awesome.
