Prowheelbuilder.com experiences? Custom wheelset advice needed
Has anyone used these guys before? I'm torn between using them and building the wheelset myself. These will be cyclocross/training/touring wheels, built up as follows:
FRONT WHEEL
Rims: Velocity VELOCITY DEEP V ROAD 700c WHITE RIM MSW
Hubs: Campagnolo CAMPAGNOLO CENTAUR FRONT HUB
Spokes: BLUE 14 GUAGE SPOKES
Nipples: Red Blue
Weight: 1044.4 grams
Price: $166.60
REAR WHEEL
Rims: Velocity VELOCITY DEEP V ROAD 700c WHITE RIM MSW
Hubs: Campagnolo CAMPAGNOLO CENTAUR REAR HUB
Spokes: BLUE 14 GUAGE SPOKES
Nipples: Silver Brass Red
Weight: 1194.7 grams
Price: $199.50
Your Weight Total is 2239.1 grams.
Your Order Total is $366.10
Seems like a pretty good deal to me...but if anyone knows where I can get the stuff much cheaper/better I'm all ears.

Those are pretty good prices. Online retail you'd only be saving $30 or so (though you didn't say how many spokes front/rear), and maybe less if you couldn't find the multicolor nips and/or spokes at the same place.
Might I suggest 2.0/1.8/2.0 instead of straight gauge spokes? They'll build a stronger wheel. Minimally less stiff, but more durable.

I'm thinking 32h front and rear. Although...I'm 180lbs, and I fully intend to jump off/run into and over things with these, so I might do 36h.

36h Deep-Vs are REALLY common on the nicer tandems.

I've heard a lot of positive comments about Texas Cyclesport. They offer Campy Record hubs with Mavic Open Pros for $375. Also offer Centaur hubs with other rim choices.

Wheelbuild Redux:
By my calculations if I use Mirage Hubs I'll need the following spoke lengths for 32h rims:
NDS: 284.3
DS: 282
F: 284.7
Since I'm a dork and want the wheels to be purdy I think I'm going to stick with the Prowheelbuilder.com straight guage spokes (unless someone knows where I can find 2.0/1.8 colored spokes...)
That gives me the following:
Pro Wheel Builder Parts
Product Name Quantity Price Each Total Options
BLUE 14 GUAGE SPOKES
Size: 285mm
Color: Blue $0.75 $15.00 Remove
RED 14 GUAGE SPOKES
Size: 285mm
Color: Red $0.75 $15.00 Remove
BLUE 14 GUAGE SPOKES
Size: 284mm
Color: Blue $0.75 $15.00 Remove
RED 14 GUAGE SPOKES

Sub Total $207.95

GRAND TOTAL $207.95

Including shipping that'll put me around ~300 and give me something to do other than surf the interwebs, read and watch cable all day while I'm recovering from knee surgery.
Thoughts? Anyone want to make fun of my red/white/blue wheels?

I ordered a wheelset from the about 7 months ago. Velocity Aerohead rims, Sapim CX-Ray spokes and White Industry Hubs. After everything was tallied up online, the shipping was nearly the cost of the wheels themselves (notice my location). I called them and told them that I wanted to order from them but the shipping cost was the dealbreaker, so they lowered it substantially.
The wheels were well built. The rear rim had a fairly bad scratch on it but it appeared to only be cosmetic so I let it go. I'm sure it didn't occur during shipping because the box was not damaged at all. Other than that, I'm pretty happy. Don't know if I'd order from them again, though. Prices were good but not great.

Resurrecting an old thread, I'm aware, but here's one person's experience with ProWheelBuilder.com:
For the record, I ordered a set of wheels through ProWheelBuilder.com. Their site indicates that unless unforseen circumstances arise, an item is backordered, or the wheels built are using Reynolds hoops/rims, your order should ship within 11 days. No problem...I wasn't in a hurry.
Roughly 2 weeks later I sent an e-mail as a simple "hey, just checking in on status" and got a reply that night indicating they'd ship out the very next day (a Friday) or the following Monday at the latest. Cool...no problem.
A week goes by and nothing. I send another e-mail to see if I can get a tracking number and/or status update, given I was charged $53.00 for shipping in what was supposed to be FedEx ground shipping. I thought the charge for shipping was quite high, given I recently shipped an ENTIRE bike from Texas to Cali for $68.00 FedEx ground, but that's a moot point.
I never received a response.
I called ProWheelBuilder, several times, and never had my call answered and when it went to voice mail, the machine/voice mail indicating the mailbox was full and therefore I could not leave a message.
Great. No response to e-mails and there's no other means of contacting them.
Several more e-mails were sent to find out the status of the order and to express my disenchantment with their lack of customer service. STILL no phone call, no replied emails and no calls I placed were answered nor could I leave a message for the reasons listed previously.
A month after the wheels were ordered I had the following:
a) no wheels
b) an e-mailed receipt from Prowheelbuilder
c) a deduction of funds from my account for services and goods NOT provided
d) one e-mail indicating the wheels were going to be shipped out no later than ________
I contacted the bank and requested a charge-back on the account, for the reasons I've included in this message, and my account has been credited.
So take this message for what it is...just one person's experience.
That said, as far as I'm concerned, he/they are crooks. I have nothing indicating he/they were going to provide the services and goods that they deducted my account for which, in my book, is theft.
It's all about principal. If it's going to take you a month+ to deliver a product, so be it...just state/say as much. No problem. At that, if a customer (whom has PAID MONEY) attempts to contact you simply to get an update as to what's going on, you NEED to contact that customer back in a timely manner or pick some other media of employment to support yourself because, obviously, customer service is not your forte'.

Their "policy" statement says, "If there is a problem such as back ordered product / unavailable we will contact you as soon as possible."
Five days later I email them cancelling the order. I get no confirmation email, no funds returned. I finally get through on the phone and find out after three weeks, they still hadn't even received the special order rim. I've bought things from reputable shops like Harriscyclery.com, and they inform you immediately if something needs to be special ordered. Many online shops' pages state up from whether an item is out of stock. It seems this place is willing to let you go through the order process and make you wait any length of time, leaving you completely in the dark on the status.
With so many reputable online sources, I'd strongly advise everyone to avoid this place despite any rave reviews from those who got lucky.

My experience with ProWheelbuilder was so-so, not super but not terrible. There were some things that caused the hair to stand up on the back of my neck, but for the most part they were corrected.
I inquired about building a set of Reynolds DV46Cs onto a Powertap rear/ White Industries front hub. It took several e-mails to get a response out of them, but they were favorable so I placed the order. I opted for the ceramic bearing upgrade and asked for them to build a set of wheels to be as strong as possible, keeping my heavy weight in mind.
I received the wheels about three weeks later, and they were very nice. I immediately ran into a problem with the steel washers on the Powertap hub not being reinstalled correctly, and a subsequent phone call got a new freehub assembly overnighted to me free of charge (long story, but great customer service on this issue).
It took a while for me to notice, but it turns out that my rear wheel wasn't built very well or with my weight in mind. Within a month, the rear wheel was pretty far out of true, and needed to be trued about once a month after that. Compare that with the front wheel, which is as solid as it gets. It's never needed a spoke wrench despite being only 16 spokes.
Finally, a few months ago, a spoke broke on the rear wheel and I had a local shop rebuild it with beefier spokes. After a short break-in period, it hasn't needed truing in two months so far.
ProWheelBuilder seems to be a hot-or-cold company, meaning that my experiences go from very good to very bad without a lot of in-between. Their prices are good, but they are somewhat hard to get hold of. Once you get hold of them, they seem to have good customer service. The product is good if it's made right (ie. my front wheel) but very bad when done wrong (ie. my rear wheel). All in all, if I had to give a reason for this I'd say that they are undermanned (I'd guess they're a two-person outfit from my communications) and really busy.

Like others, I have had mixed results with prowheelbuilder.com. I get the impression it is a one-man operation, which could explain some of the flakeyness.
I had a set of DV46C wheels built last year. The price was substantially better than I could find anywhere else, but it took longer than expected to get the wheels, and the freehub was the wrong kind (Shimano rather than Campy). At that time, it was a bit hard to get them on the phone to resolve the problem, but eventually everything was sorted out, and the wheels have been everything I expected.
They do have an interesting incentive program where you earn $$$ for use on future purchases. I took advantage of the incentive money I earned with the original purchase to have the rear wheel upgraded with a Powertap SL+ hub. I saved a lot of money, but I am still waiting on the wheel.
I think their phone system has been upgraded, because they are easier to get a hold of on the phone these days.
My experience with prowheelbuilder.com has been similar to my experience with probikekit.com. I saved quite a bit of money, but it took a long time to get my stuff.

I received my DV46C rear wheel rebuilt with a PowerTap SL+ hub from prowheelbuilder.com today. The box didn't look very good, but the wheel inside was as expected. Even the freehub was correct this time. Shipping was with USPS, which could explain the state of the box. However, the transit time was not too bad, and I saved a bundle. Of course, you can never really tell with wheels until you ride them a bit. As soon as it stops raining, I hope to try out the wheels.
