Just how much can a man (or woman) stand!

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just how much can a man (or woman) stand!

Got a new bike for Christmas.
Took my son snowboarding the next day. Once there, and much to my surprise, we both realized we'd rather be biking (he got new ultegra pedals and Sidi shoes for xmas.)
When we got back, I got a 4-week cold.
It rained like crazy most of Feb. (normally, a very welcome thing)
A big storm is pounding N. Calif. right now, this very minute (hey, it hailed this morning!!!).

... and my new bike is still standing in my bedroom, calling out ...

I've been on my new bike maybe 4-5 times. How long can this go on!?!

sunburst

PS. thank god i've got my guitars.

I got a new road bike on Thursday, and I haven't had a chance to take it anywhere then onto the rollers since then. Hopefully tomorrow will melt an inch or two of this snow off, and I can ride it then.

Yeah, I've built up a $2000 bike (had the frame for over 6 months) built up during late 2007 and I haven't even ridden it for a test ride!!!! I'm still sane, so you'll be just fine.

I'd pop it into a trainer or such, that way when the good weather hits, you'll be ready--or more ready than if you hadn't spent some time preparing.

Californian's are so spoiled. It rains 2 days in a row and everyone starts complaining. The 10-day weather forecast says starting Monday, there will be 8 straight days of partly sunny in the mid-60s.

It's not that I haven't been riding this year, I ride everywhere since I don't have a car. It's that I have a nice new bike that I want to take out, but I don't really feel like riding it in the wet, salty slush at the moment.

Agreed. If the weather is bad, I try and always leave my good bike at home.

lol...i guess i'm with you there. i got a new bike last week, well my first real road bike actually... and i got to ride it twice. the next day was **** weather, so i skipped the ride, and the next day on my way to the gym i destroyed my front large chainring...so i'm waiting for the new part to come in and i probably wont be able to ride again til this coming wednesday... i'm not happy. again, this all depends on the weather, though i think i picked a good week for a catastrophic failure because it has snowed and been ****ty out all week since then.

mid-60s! oh man, that's cold where I'm from!!! You know, it almost froze this year in the bay area, and that terrible winter of '07 (or maybe '06), I even lost all the tropical plants I had recently planted. Now that's just too much ...

Seriously now, I went down to my Swiss neighbors in Jan, with my son, trying to drag him out (my son's so strong I try to find at least a partial match-up, to keep his interest up), and he said 'no way' or something like that. He runs in the winter and only cycles when it's nice. He said he's even considered moving to soCal. And that from a guy who cut his teeth cycling in the Alps!

I have been riding, btw. I've got a very old Specialized Rockhopper (pre-shocks) for wet weather and a steel Trek for just OK days, or if I don't want to expose my new bike too much. I suppose I'll get over babying it ... in time.

When I got my new Scott bike, I had to leave town for the weekend an hours after I got it home. I had 3 days of torture thinking of my new bike that I had only ridden around for 10 minutes before I bought it

I bought my 50th bday present to myself in early Feb, 2005. I didn't really get to ride it until April of that year. It'll come. In the meantime, I've been outside 3 times so far this year, today being one of them. It was cold, around 40, with a bit of a wind. I can't really get myself going in that kind of weather. OTOH, on Monday it was over 60 and it felt great to be able to ride and it didn't feel like I'd ever stopped for the winter.

We are spoiled, but consider this -we pay excessively high rents, drive in ****ty traffic for over an hour to go six miles, breath filthy air and put up with the Hollywood, plastic mentality. We, by God, should get year round sun and 75 degree weather. And, no, before you suggest I move, I don't want to live in some other crappy area of the country where rain/hail/sleet/snow/humidity/mosquitos are expected at some point for more than two days in a row throughout the year. I'll suck 3/4 of my paycheck into my rent, thank you very much.

To the OP - Darling, I feel your pain and I can't stand this ****ing ****ty weather!

Are you serious?

Road miles for January: 270.
Road miles for February: 300+.
Commuting miles: 100+.

This (obviously) excludes time on the rollers.

I've been riding this year since January 6th. I might have 700 miles so far.

Not a ton of miles, but that's with more snowstorms than I'm willing to count, pouring rain and sub-freezing temperatures on 90% of my rides. But enough about me. I'm sure pcad will be here soon to tell you how weak you (and I) are .

Anyway, if this is what NorCal roadies are like, I can't wait to move out there and make them hurt all winter.

Gosh, this road forum is making me mean! *cough* I understand. Weather is harsh. Keep it real.

And HTFU.
