Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Itch to Cycle - How Far Does he Have to Go?

Hi,

My nephew has an urge to go cycling. Problem is that he is snowbound here in Ottawa, Ontario. He'd like to fly south to get in a week's worth of cycling. How far would be have to go? ie Virginia? Kentucky? North or South Carolina? He has lots of airmiles so the distance isn't really an issue although I'd offer that the far south or the west coast is too far.

Can anyone recommend some specific destinations for a quick getaway? He's equally comfortable in the hills or on flats.

Thanks.

Edit: budget, while not unlimited, isn't a major issue. My brother will accompany him but will not ride. So as late suggested, training camp or group riding ideas would be most welcome. Thx.

Depends on the budget I suppose... there are roadie training camps in the Caribbean. Were you think a sagged tour, solo and group riding somewhere warm,
race training, or just toodling around a warm beach in Florida on a rented cruiser?

Two variables; personal preference and volatile weather this time of year. For example, here in Atlanta today the high is 70. 3 days ago there were snow flurries. Also, this is a hilly area... you can go further south and get very, very flat terrain.

So what do you want, hilly or flat? And just remember there are no guarantees on weather this time of year unless you go really really far south.

Can't beat southern California. Most reliable weather for all North America.

Atlanta and snow flurries... get the hell outta here.

Heres what to do.

goto: https://adds.aviationweather.gov/

Click on the Satellite tab.
There will be selector dots right above the map. If its daylight... you can use visible (this is the easiest for non weather people) Otherwise use infrared color (or wait for daylight).

Select one of the "loop" options based on ur connection.

If there is significant cloud cover it will make it slightly more difficult but basically. Everything that moves... is cloud cover. Everything thats white and solid... is snow pack. All you have to do is get outside of the snow pack and temperatures will go up dramatically (I can explain this scientifically if you want). Then... figure out what city is close to that area... goto whatever weather site you normally use and type it in the little box. See what the 10-day looks like and find out if you're right.

I know here in Grand Forks, ND there is still a ton of snow so temps are between 10 and 30 (positive for once) but similarly Bismarck ND which is 4 hours west but not far south is out of the snow pack and theyre seeing temps from 30 - 50.

Bing bang boom. Ride outside.

Edit... this info is good for anyone looking for a spot to ride btw.
