Ultegra worth the upgrade?
I am building up a frame and am deciding what to get. 105 or ultegra. Both brand new 8 piece groups. The Ultegra is $150 more.
Maybe a combination of 105 and ultegra? What would you choose and why? |
I say yes. But I say that in part to justify my decision to go with Ultegra over 105...

If you are going to spend an extra $150 dollars anywhere (beyond wheels maybe) the group is a good place to do it, in my opinion. If it's a primary bike you're building, I think it's worth it. If this is a secondary bike, maybe you save the cash for some other goodies, as the 105 would work fine.

For the front shifter, yeah. Maybe the front derailleur too, but maybe its just because I've got a non 105 triple (hey, it was cheap). Otherwise 105 is good and I have no complaints. Ultegra is more bling, 105 is respectable too though, and it looks good in person.

$150 is a small price to pay for ultegra over 105. I say do it.

Ultegra. I have all 105 and it works great but like Geoff326 said, $150 is completely worth it.
|
the bike I chose for my sister was a 105 group. my kestrel is ultegra. I'd definitely go ultegra if you have the choice.
it's smoother, built a little better for fit and finish/materials, and it should last you for decades to come with minimal P.M. |
Resale value is probably the most important reason to upgrade.

Compare Ultegra SL price as well...performance/weight nearly on par w/ Dura-Ace from what I've read, though have not ridden it. Also some bling factor if that is important at all.
