Garmin 305 prices to drop?

In a few months i'm banking on the fact that many will be on ebay. What'ya think? ehh ehh?

biffstephens 03-06-08 12:59 AM

Watch for mine!!!

vic32amg 03-06-08 01:18 AM

what does the new one do that the old one doesn't other than color. I doubt you will see a significant drop.

especially since the price had dropped dramatically in the last year.

Incorrect to the 10th degree

The new models do what they should have done from the start, they are just too expensive for me.

Careful on the ebay stuff. Lots of 305 experienced open seals, and poor battery compression fittings.

I wonder where the three 305's that I sent back to Garmin ended up.

One would hope that garmin has produced a reliable new product. However, I won't be field testing them for them.

back in the hands of users who sent their busted up ones back. You never know, you might have got your 1st one back when you put you returned your 3rd!

Gee3 03-06-08 10:55 AM

Maybe they'll do another $75 rebate deal again for the 305!!

awiner 03-06-08 12:20 PM

My 305 will be up for sale next week when my 705 arrives :)

vic32amg 03-06-08 12:37 PM

Exactly what does the new one do that the old one doesn't? Other than color.

I guess if you are doing Cross country super long distance riding then perhaps having real world navigation helps but otherwise where does it come into play?

mtnwalker 03-06-08 12:41 PM

I'm asking my wife for one for Christmas.:D

Depends on where and when you bought, got mine w/ HR, cadence and maps for $550.

RacerJRP 03-06-08 06:58 PM

I sure hope the prices on the 305 come down, but I want one NOW! I'm getting more serious about my training, and I think this would be really useful.

How very pleasant of you. I'm sorry you can't find happiness in life, you'll kick the habit soon enough. Hang in there.

Hmmm. Maybe I got them. Care to elaborate a bit?

I had my first Edge 305 fill with water (at least enough to quit) in a rainstorm on my 2nd ride with it. The lady in customer service at Garmin asked if I was swimming with it, like that was very unusual.

Recently I wase trying to mount the unit wearing cold weather gloves. Dropped it and shook the battery loose (still worked, but rattled).

Your post is the first I've hint I've seen that these are not uncommon problems. To Garmin's credit, both times they fixed it (almost) no questions asked and it was back in my mailbox eight days from the day I dropped it in the mail.

MotionBased has a forum outlining every conceivable thing that can go wrong with the 305's. Someone actually has a series of steps for taking these apart. Only don't do it because there is nothing there to fix.

Search the BF and you will find more.

Bottom line: the interface between the screen the and the case will leak and the compression fitting between the battery and the case/pcboard will weaken. The second scenario causes interrmittent off cycles during your ride that will not go away. The first scenario is catasthropic in that your sweat seeps in and shorts out the display. You get a black display upon the special boot up that Garmin reps always have you do before they have you send it in...

Garmin has excellent customer service, they just keep on sending you new ones. I've said this before, all field testing on these units is being done by the consumer. If I had to do it over again, I would have purchased mine at REI. Just for the ease of return.

but do you have to pay ~70 bucks every time? or are they free replacements?

Thanks.

I read most of the Garmin threads here and I've searched Google for hours and never turned up the Motionbased forum. I've even been over there to see what they have to offer, just never saw the problems area of forum.

The black screen with the water was exactly what happened to mine the first time, but it was rain, not sweat.

I love the Garmin, but I'm with you on the quality thing.

I don't see any reason for the new garmin. I would think $550-700 would be better spent on wheels and the old garmin.

All this real time GPS stuff is nonsense. If you don't know your way home then you "my friend (McCain)" are clown shoes.
:D

They are free replacements if they occur within the first year. After that they begin charging. Of course it's $10 to ship insured, so nothing is free. Again REI would be the way to go if I were to do it over again. Simple exchange with a brand new unit.
