Anyone shipped a bike to Australia
Can anyone tell me if they've had to pay tax when shipping a bike to Australia. Was looking at a Specialized around the $3000 mark.
Thanks - Paul

Are you looking to buy a bike from outside of Australia and import it into Australia?

Depending on where you get it from you can sometimes get them to invoice it as a demo frame/sale frame and reduce the cost. The online invoice is was serves as the detail for the warranty. My supplier did this and without me asking and I didn't pay duty on the frame. The gst is charged on anything valued over AUD $1000, and its based on the full amount. I paid shipping of USD 265 for a Fedex express service.
I saved AUD 2k on the frame and got it in a week, locally it would have taken 3 months.
I'd like to buy from the OZ LBS's, but unfortunately I can't justify the price difference on frames and components compared to overseas even when shipping cost is taken into account, its usually about 30% cheaper.

The same bike was sold in Japan for A$2,700.
